Great captures Stephen! And nice reminder that I need to get back to Florence soon...
I'm also loving my 180 2.8 apo and its probably my top 3 all-time favorites. Was surprised to see they've dropped in price recently... if I didn't already have more than one.

Anyhow, enjoy the rest of your trip!
I did not know they had dropped in price. The one I have is quite rare as it is the second version that accepts both the 1.4x and 2x extenders and they only made 400. The last time I saw one for sale it was over $5,000. When I bought mine, the price was similar and I could only find one for sale anywhere I looked. Still, I have no interest in selling mine as it is quite useful, sharp across the frame from wide open, and fairly compact.

The Leica R 280/4 APO will never cease to amaze.........produced between 1993-2009 it still shines on the most advanced sensors.

Well just noticed there are more version 1s available than usual and so maybe that's why the prices dropped a bit, but I have not seen another version II available in a loooong time. But yes version II is crazy good by itself or with the 1.4x / 2.0x and I have not seen the price drop on those one bit... as you said extremely rare which probably makes it highly collectible too but I'm only interested in the 'highly useable' part

Agreed.
Here are a few more from the Leica R 180/2.8 apo. Have some with the extender but have not processed them yet:

I have a 180/2.8 Elmarit R (non-APO) that I love for its sharpness, color and rendering. Here are some recent images taken with an A7ii at Bosque del Apache, New Mexico. I don't go in much for nature photography, even when I am at a nature preserve. However, you will note one shot of a nature photographer.
