I really like these pictures. I now wonder if it still makes sense to buy this lens for a Nikon-camera and modify this lens for it. Or are there other more current cheaper options that made this combination more or less obsolete?

LoL. The Leica R 280/4 APO is one of the best Leica glass if not the best.
It is also a difficult lens to find and the cost is substantial.
Quality wise.....it is one of the best lenses across all brands.

Let me put it this way, quite a number of us on FM have this rare (only 2000 made), exceptional, and expensive lens. It is a favorite for a long focal length lens for many of us. Telyt (Doug Herr) likes this lens so much that he owns 2 of these lenses, one as a back-up for his first. It is an extraordinary piece of glass that will also mate well with the Leica R 1.4X Apo Extender as well as the Leica R 2X Apo Extender. From what I have been able to observe at least from preliminary results, my R 280mm f4 Apo Telyt with my R 1.4X Apo extender appears to be noticeably sharper than my newly acquired Canon new FD 500mm f4.5 L lens. I will have to make more comparisons, but I believe this to be sharper by a fair amount. I will need to do some comparisons of my R 280mm f4 Apo Telyt with my R 2X Apo extender compared to the Canon. The Leica combination is substantially smaller, but the Canon is faster when the Leica is combined with the extenders.

Leitax has a sterling rep, but I was unwilling to molest my copy despite having a Nikon FX setup. The 280/4 is attachable without change to Canon and, more interestingly, to the A7 family. My alt setup is the A7ii and the rock-solid Novoflex R/FE adapter.
