I guess choices for a fast 24/1.4 or 36mm effective would be either the uber expensive Leica M 24/1.4 or the new Nikon 24/1.4 G adapted for a "mere" half of the 'Lux ($2200).
With the lenses Sony's offering here, you have to wonder if they aren't assuming that people will just forego their lenses and adapt other mounts to it?
The 16/2.8 appears to be a dog toy from the IR test. The 18-55 isn't a whole lot better, and it's pretty big. The 18-200 is comically large.
From what I see, these cameras will live and die based on their handling with alt lenses. It's too bad they aren't offering an EVF, because many people who use alt lenses like viewfinders, too.
The more the merrier, but Sony certainly left some holes in these first two cameras for the competition to exploit.
Great news the path that Sony are taking. Very much like Olympus when it first introduced the EP-1. I loved the EP-1, and I used 43 lenses with the adapter, such as the Oly 50mm macro. Great combo, but the IQ did not compare to the 5DII in medium and low light. I ended using the 5DII with zeiss lenses, as this is IQ that I prefer. For a P&S, there are some great cameras now at low ISO's.
I am personally looking to forward to a FF Sony with Zeiss lenses. Everything else is a compromise.
If you want a light P&S at low ISO's, they are available. These cameras do produce excellent images, poster size shots which are very acceptable.
I don't think you can have a excellent APS or FF sensor and lenses don't match, or have inferior IQ.
Great center. Awful corners. I wonder how much it will matter to P&S shooters but DSLR shooters will probably be dismayed. I wonder how good lenses will perform on it.
looks like wides are adapted onto other lenses http://www.dpreview.com/previews/sonynex5/
"Sony is also taking the unusual step of offering screw-on adapterlenses for its 16mm F2.8 pancake lens (they attach to the bayonet of the lens so can't be used with other lenses). In a manner familiar from compact cameras, it will be possible to adapt the lens from its usual 24mm equivalent field-of-view using either an ultra-wide adapter taking it to 20mm equivalent or a fisheye that gives a 16mm equivalent view."
I don't think the currently offered lenses are claimed to be anything but entry level amateur grade. I'm sure the better lenses will be labelled G or Zeiss.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.
Really? The center has loads of CA, for a prime lens that doesn't have to be a retrofocus or fast optical design. Very poor all round IMO.

I really like the look of the NEX-5, but wish there was a better selection of lenses (without using adapters). I'd love something a bit less wide than the 16mm without the bulk of the 18-55. I think I'm going to end up picking up the NEX-5/16mm anyway - this looks like a really fun camera, and so easy to carry around.
