trying to decide between the 35G and the 24G is really, really killing me. i've even been walkin around with my 24-70 zooming from 35 to 24 and it just doesn't help. seems i'm a huge fan of both! back in the days of canon shooting, i shot almost all my work with my 35mm f1.4... in fact, i owned the 24L and the 35L and sold the 24 due to lack of use. that should answer the question for me, but man... this thread makes me itch some shallow-depthed wild angle madness. also, anyone know of a good online Canadian store to purchase either the 24mm or the 35mm?

I think the increased DOF at f1.4 on the 24mm is much more helpful for walking around in low-light than the 35mm. It's part of the reason I am happy with f/2 as my widest option on my 50mm as opposed to f1.4.

I agree....I have MANY examples of wide open infinity shots around town at night that are almost in focus across the entire frame. The movie theater shot above wasn't quite infinity but pretty close....couldn't have gotten this shot at 1/100 with any other lens. The DOF on this lens is amazing. The 24 length allows for a far more unique perspective in my opinion than the 35. The 35 is more of a standard length where 24 forces you to use creativity.
mshi...the 24 AF is a little slower than your 85G but the accuracy is just as good. I had the 85G for a month or so (moved to Sigma). They are very similar in AF. Actually, the Nikon 24 is my most accurate AF lens behind my 70-200 VRII

Sorry for going off topic... How do you compare Sigma 85/1.4 versus Nikkor 85/1.4G? I'm interested especially in (1)AF speed (2) AF accuracy (3)IQ and (4)bokeh but any other finding is helpful too.

AF speed goes to the Sigma as it is much faster.
AF accuracy is debatable i was not happy with the accuracy of my 85G the my Sigma is spot on.
IQ is pretty close most of the lens test websites (lenstip, photozone) give the nod to SIgma in the middle and Nikon on the boarders. Shot wide open sharpness is very similar. Stopped down sigma pulls ahead.
Bokeh is a personal thing so I wont comment which is better. I can say both lenses seem close the Nikon may be a bit smoother. I think the D version beats them both in the Bokeh department.
I agree with most of what Bruce says from my experience. Actually, the only thing I disagree with is that I think the 85G was more accurate and locked better in dark situations. Outside of that the Sigma is faster and quieter. I think the 85D was the fastest, loudest and least accurate. I also liked the 85D bokeh best.
Thanks guys for sharing your experience with the two new 85!... One extra question: I have Nikon 24/1.4 and with no doubt it is now my top preferred lens... and believe me or not I own many other good, fast and expensive pieces of glass. I am curious to know... do you consider the new 85 lenses from Nikon and Sigma to be equal good with 24/1.4 or at list they are playing in the same league?
I consider the Nikon 24 1.4 to be one of Nikon's best. It is my favorite. Of the lenses I have used the 70-200 VRII and Nikon 24 1.4 are the best. The 24 1.4 is just a freakish lens in being that it is so sharp wide open and has so little flaws. No coma wide open. Bokeh to die for. Accurate AF. Only downside I can say is the AF speed....which hasn't bothered me once. For being an UWA and delivering so flawlessly in so many areas it is a very unique lens. The 85 1.4s are good....but you have several to choose from that all deliver excellent results. There is nothing else like the 24 1.4.
rsolti13, when I saw that theatre shot, I thought there was no way that was shot wide open. Just too much DOF for wide open. Then I looked at the exif. Dang! You guys are really making me lust for this lens.
