p.1 #2 · 5D mkII firmware is out....now

Firmware Version 2.0.3 incorporates five enhancements to the movie function and a fix to the manual sensor cleaning function of the EOS 5D Mark II camera.

1. Adds or changes the following movie frame rates.

NTSC:
* 1920×1080 : 30 fps (changed - actual 29.97 fps)
* 1920×1080 : 24 fps (added - actual 23.976 fps)
* 640×480 : 30 fps (changed - actual 29.97 fps)
PAL:
* 1920×1080 : 25 fps (added - actual 25.0 fps)
* 1920×1080 : 24 fps (added - actual 23.976 fps)
* 640×480 : 25 fps (added - actual 25.0 fps)

2. Adds a function for manually adjusting the sound recording level (64 levels).
3. Adds a histogram display (brightness or RGB) for shooting movies in manual exposure.
4. Adds shutter-priority AE mode (Tv) and aperture-priority AE (Av) mode to the exposure modes for shooting movies.
5. Changes the audio sampling frequency from 44.1 KHz to 48 KHz.
6. Fixes a phenomenon where communication between the camera and the attached lens is sometimes interrupted after manual sensor cleaning. (This phenomenon only affects units with Firmware Version 1.2.4.)

So does the 24FPS mode really give it a film-like look?

I've waited since 12/08 for 24p on this camera, and now that the firmware update is on my CF card and in my camera, I HAVE TO CHARGE MY BATTERIES!!! Ahhhhh!

Updated, seems good here... Can't really tell the diff between 24 and 30 fps, but then again I am no videographer... Looks good though.

Just updated... Im not sure if I'm doing something wrong but I can only record 15 sec max.

EDIT: Tried a different CF card and works fine with a different card

I updated with no problems. Admittedly I was so exited that I jammed my cf card into my reader and nearly broke it!

richierich1212: It's not just the frame rate. The film look is comprised of a few different things, those being the DOF of a full frame sensor, the frame rate, and the shutter speed at which film is captured, which for film is about 1/48th (or about half the time of the shutter.. the other half was used to transport the film to the next frame). By using that 1/48th exposure time for each frame of a film, the motion blur and movement was more fluid.

What most people don't notice is that video cameras will bump up shutter speeds in order to adjust for daylight or incoming light. By doing that, the time between each frame is longer, and the captured frame itself is sharper because it's a shorter duration.

So, if you start shooting with that 5D at 23.976, try giving 1/50th shutter speed a shot.

BTW, Gladiator bucked this trend and used a 1/192nd second exposure time, which made the fight scenes look very crisp and worked especially well with the moving blades and weapons.

Max

looks like that card was too slow at 150x. Ive used it before the firmware update with no problems....

Used a 233x card and all seems ok.

The histogram and sound level controls are very useful. No problems here.

Wow! The manual audio controls work great - the hiss is gone now with my MKE400, and the audio is much better, much fuller low frequencies
