Interesting, I've taken a ton of shots at large aperatures with the Sigmalux and I can't say I've ever noticed that effect, although I don't think it would bother me if I did - I actually kind of like it.
Bokeh is indeed very subjective Shoot an open light source with it, if the CH's are large enough you should notice it (both copies I had exhibited the same effect).

There is no doubt that the Sigma is smoother, but that swirling....ick.
Here is a shot that it would have ruined if it was taken with the Sigma.
That's "onion" bokeh. It can happen with lenses that use aspherical elements. It can also be exaggerated with heavy sharpening. It happens on both my 85L's (Mk 1 and 2). If you despise it that much, you won't like the 85L's either.

The sample images posted are SOOC apart from the added text (in camera sharpness set to 4). Both copies of the Sigma 50 exhibited such bokeh characteristics consistently. Neither my 50/1.4 or 85/1.8 have ever done that. I have never seen it occur with the 85L, would you happen to have a sample SOOC?

"All of the lenses will available for purchase this spring, and will be available in Sigma, Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax mounts."
I have serious doubts about their ability to deliver on that promise though. Five lenses in five mounts over the next two months? Not bloody likely. I'll believe it when I see it. If history is any indication, each of those lenses will first become available in Canon mount first, before they trickle down to the also-rans...

I replaced my Canon 85 1.8 with a Canon 100 f/2 so I can't directly compare the bokeh of the Canon 85 1.8 with the Sigma 50 1.4, but I have no issue with the bokeh of the 100 f/2 (which is remarkedly similar to the 135L).
Also, the extra speed of f/1.4 vs f/1.8 is something that I would rarely use.
Additionally, as much as I love my Sigma 50 1.4 it did requre a month long trip to Sigma (actually CRIS) to get the focus right.
Thus, unless the Sigma 85 is stellar and well priced, I doubt it will see its way into my bag.
I suspect the Sigma 85/1.4 will have bokeh more similar to the Samyang/Rokinon/Falcon/Bower/etc. 85/1.4 Aspherical (i.e. much more like the Sigma 50/1.4).
Here is the Rokinon 85/1.4 compared to the Canon FD 85/1.2 SSC Aspherical (Great Grandpa of 85L) and the EF 85/1.8:

Any lens with an aspherical element will show this effect. The 85L has it too. Some of us call it the "onion ring effect". It only shows up in extreme conditions, and most agree that the positive effects of aspherical glass far outweigh this... YMMV.
The Sigma 50mm F1.4's MTF drops off a cliff after a 15mm circle (about coveres a Canon APS H-1.275x sensor). Not such a good lens for FF.
Pour Moi, I am holding out for the new Nikkor 85mm F1.2 VR (they can put VR in a UWA zoom after all). It shouldn't cost much more than the new 70-200??
