Heh, I glanced at that and thought ISO 800, OK, looks nice, but why is he showing it to us (other than it being such a cute kid). Then I read the last line and thought, 8000! Whoa! ;-)

Yeah, ISO8000 is still very much good.
Once you hit ISO12800, that's when you start worrying about reducing noise via NR software, etc...
We have come a long way in such a short time haven't we?

Susi I'm not a PP guy. If I don't get it out of the camera close, I'm pretty much screwed. This is a JPEG shot in camera not raw, Faithful picture style. My typical PP is so simple it's scary.

I gotta tell you, you are missing out on so much without NR software, however it sounds like you have a set workflow that works for you, so that's great.

In my PP steps outlines above it shows that I use Noise Ninja, I also have Neat image but haven't used it in years.
I played around yesterday at my son's birthday party with Auto ISO for the first time ever. Interesting how it works. This image was at F4 1/100 and ISO 8000.

Can anyone share their thoughts on how the AF is in movie mode?
I have not found words to describe how bad AF is in movie mode.
Most vid web sites recommend you focus normally and then switch the lens to MF then switch to LV and then press the start movie button (FE for me). There are expensive MF add on for lens to assist in keeping the subject in focus; and it is common to also use a remote monitor to judge the focus.
On the upside you will be shooting at 1/60 or 1/125 (twice the frame rate of 30fps or 60fps) so it is easy to stop down to f16 or even f22 and still have plenty of light. In fact you may need to use ND filters or something similar. There are variable ND filters for sale on ebay that go up to ND9 or more.

Either Nik Dfine or NeatImage Pro+. I first try to remove the color noise. dFine is very good at removing the color blotches present when shooting at ISO12800, so that's what I usually use for pass 1. For pass 2 & 3, I have the option of using any one of the NR plugins I have, whether it be the 2 I already mentioned or Noise Ninja. For the concert photos, I got a little lazy and used Noise Ninja.
What do you do with pass 2 and 3? I'm interested in learning more... I haven't heard of 3 passes for noise reduction before.
Wow, that is pretty disheartening. I wonder if they purposely hobbled the AF system as to not compete with camcorders.

Camcorder?? It's in no way a competitor to a camcorder. I could count on one hand the amount of people who buy a Mk IV to take to Disneyland to film the kids with.
The AF isn't good in Movie Mode. That much is agreed. But it's a professional tool, and professionals in the video area manual focus. We have to learn to do the same.

The auto focus isn't all that great on HD camcorders in a similar price range, nobody uses it as you pointed out.
