Just received one of these 35-70`s from KEH with a BGN rating for $379 and it is actually in mint condition but of course didnt come with any caps front or rear.
Dont need the rear since i have plenty of rear Canon caps to fit the EOS AF confirm adapter but which front cap do some of you folks suggest i get. I assume i need a 70mm.
Has any of you 35-70 owners that have purchased & use the CY to EOS adapter with AF confirmation noticed some play between the lens & adapter ?
I purchased the one below off e-bay per recommendations but was wondering if this is normal with most AF adapters and if not what remedy should i take if any to resolve this issue.
Also have noticed the AF confirm will not work at any distance at f8.0. Works fine between f3.4 to 5.6.
BTW the pics dont seem to be effected by the above mentioned.
Guess i could simply cut 3 small pieces of black electrical tape and place them between the adapter & the lens since i have an adapter for each MF lens.
That's common with a lot of the middle of the road adapters - there is a thin wire like catch that can be adjusted for more pressure - it usually doesn't do much - the best way I have found is to use aluminum tape - can be found at a Home Depot - etc. - it is used to seal aluminum faced insulating panels. Very, very thin with very strong adhesive.
Take the adapter and adhere the tape to the face - use a new sharp razor and trim the excess to the adapter high ridge-like area - it increases the pressure between the lens mount "hooks" and the adapter - there won't be any "play" between them. On the attached link - the only area needing tape is the cooper colored area that touches the lens.
The reason you are not getting confirmation at f8 is there is not enough light coming in - except in very bright conditions - spotty AF confirmation at smaller than f5.6 is normal.
Great to hear since it really does take some nice pics other then it does tend to overexpose most of them in bright daylight i always shoot in Raw only, so it can be adjusted very easily or i might just set the body for -1 Comp every time i mount this lens.
Recently acquired the 70-200 MKII so i am really just getting into the MF lenses to fill the 70 & lower FL range. Sold all my other low FL range Canon lenses both zoom & primes.
I've been shooting on snow for the last few months but I don't remember that lens exposing 1 stop bright - if you're hand holding - scan the scene in the viewfinder and look for mid-tone meter reading and use the camera exposure lock - shoot - chimp - reference the shutter speed & histogram - if you need to adjust the exposure bias do so or re-expose and lock for a higher/lower mid-tone reading - shoot & chimp. If you're working off a tripod - shoot - chimp and EV adjust. If I'm working off a tripod sometimes I just use manual exposure and adjust for the desired histogram reading after focus and aperture setting.
Using the exposure lock method you should be able to learn which mid-tone to set for and be very close most of the time. The attached reference from a very competent local Colorado Pro.
All good points as i probably overstated the amount since it has been more like a 1/2 stop to my eyes just looking at the few captures i observed on my monitor thus far.
We have had some really bright sunny days down here in Texas this week and i was out shooting around 11:00 AM.
I will heed your advice & tips tomorrow and practice your suggestions peaking at the histogram while shooting.
No - you need a 67 to 77mm step up ring (get the S & W one he sells..it is perfect). And then the 77mm metal lens hood. That is what I use and it works fine at all apertures and focal lengths. The 67mm metal hood will vignette noticeably at the 35mm (wide angle and macro) setting.

I thought about that and i will defintely order your suggestion. That defintely solves any issues for sure.
I really like this seller and they have fairly fast shipping also.
and so far it is fine on my 5D2...clears mirror with no issues. I have not used this adapter/lens combo as much on the new 5D2 - but so far so good.
I believe he sells the same adapter on Amazon for less $s.
I have been ordering all my adapters from these folks below and the CY to EOS AF confirm adapter below appears to be just about identical but of course i cant check the thickness with a picture. I did have to shim it a little with some tape to get a real snug fit on the 35-70 but it works great. They fit snug on all my other MF lenses except the 35-70 for some reason.
