Contax n 85 is designed to be an excellent portrait lens which performs much better wide open up close, than CY 85. Has smoother bokeh too but sharpness falls of a bit in corners which is ok for portraits.

I still am not competent with this lens. How do you get any bokeh out of it. It seems like unless the subject is 0.7m away, I cannot get any bokeh out of this lens.

Who needs bokeh with that kind of beautiful rendering?!?

I am not into lens design. The Contax N seems to have reduce the bulk of the moving group of elements and moved them to the rear group. Which is why I asked if the redesign is to facilitate fast AF or to improve on its IQ.

The reason why I asked this is that I noticed from nalahm's 2nd image of her daughter taken with N85.
https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/850075/36#9513693

and below is an image sample from CY 85/1.4

I am quite bothered by the clipped or oblong OoF highlights around the Zone C. They are exactly the same for both lenses. Maybe someone who has both lenses can show some samples of the improvement of the N85 over the CY85. TIA.

That's the cat's eye effect, which you will see with pretty much any fast lens. The highlights are clipped by the barrel of the lens. Clipping due to the mirror box is much uglier: https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/851041

Both. It is a completely new design because AF required an internal focus (IF) design, but they also wanted to exceed the performance of the decades-old CY design. Also, as already mentioned the N85 is more clearly designed and optimized for portraiture. Merely comparing the MTF's for the N and CY 85's will be a little deceptive as the MTF's are measured at infinity focus

Can you use these as manual focus lenses if the AF is broken?

Thanks, is the manual focusing ability as fluid as the Contax/Yashica Zeiss lenses?
I have a few C/Y's and like them a lot, though, kittens and kids are difficult to shoot sometimes using manual focus.
I know I can use a wide DOF and utilize a preset focusing range, but, I haven't tried that as yet, oh, good thought, I need to work on this!
Anywho, I'm thinking of getting some Contax N lenses, and eventually having them converted.
I would use them on my 5DMkII, and maybe, a future purchased Kodak SLR/C.

Contax N 17-35. Versatile Zeiss zoom. As mentioned before, I am tempted to switch to ZE 21. The only reason that I did not do so is the versatility of the zoom

I took the plunge into Contax N 85. I have been contemplating on the Sigma 85 as I see from the MTF charts that the resolving power of the Sigma is higher. I bought the Contax simply due to its rarity. It's one of those lens that one must have used in his lifetime.

But back to the IQ, has anyone done any comparisons?

How is the focus speed on these converted to EOS lenses compared to the same focal length/aperture Canons models?
I'm interested in pretty much all of them, so I would like to hear your experiences.
Thanks!

Hello My dear Bo-Ming

I will appreciate if .....IF...CONURUS can open line mount convertion for SD1 from SA to EF mount in the future then I can use all converted contax N with converted SD1.

I need SD1 to be my second Dslr back-up body.

Thanks

All contax n lens do a not-fast speed but not too low to use and reliable. OMO.
