I tried to make a combination: Contax N 70-200 f/3.5-4.5 and Kenko 2X TC and it works: in multiple point focus mode ,AF works at f/9 a little bit slow but works and firmly, I use Canon 500D to yield 1.6 X , color saturation and contrast are less than on 5D II but the sharpness is still decent - prefer to use mono- or tripod. This Pic at 536mm, 1/250s, F/9, Iso 200.
How is the 85N's focus ring? I shoot mostly video with my lenses and I'm not too happy with the 50N's focus ring. I'd hate to take the plunge on the 85N and find that the focus ring is just as bad.....

About the same as the 50.

I don't do video but what's with the focus ring? I find them ok for the times when I need to use MF.
Actually, I find the 85N's focus ring smoother and better damped than the one on my 50N, and certainly better than the focus ring on any Canon AF I've tried.
I really need a smoother focus ring because I do lots of rack focuses or pulling focus on the fly. It's not for it to just snap into focus but the whole act of it moving from out of into focus has to be smooth. With the 50N, I feel like I'm having to rotate too far and its not dampened very well, like say a ZF lens. I know it's apple to oranges as one is designed for MF but still, I need what I need.
Lotusm50 - thats good to hear. I may end up selling this 50N but I love the look for when I take photos :S. Decisions...decisions...

I was trying to err on the cautious side but I just compared my two lenses and I agree that the 85 is more dampened and smoother.Much better than Canon but less than a ZE. It is a much bigger lens with a longer focus throw too.
I've been looking at *gasp* canon's 35 1.4L offering with a bit of a side eye. I think I'm probably going to end up selling my 50 1.4 in favor of the 35L and later purchase a 85N. When comparing photos, I feel the 50N just doesn't resolve as strongly as the canon L's. Is this a valid viewpoint? As much as I am a zeiss fanatic, I've been itching to start shooting more photo with AF.
