Once again many thanks must go to Matthew Sauk for hosting the pictures. I have now included the whole 44 pictures for download plus a gif sequence of 44 pictures
Hi all,
Went to do some Ai Servo birds in flight shots this morning but it was inconclusive as there were not many Birds flying my way. So I force my son perform the running test .
I shot using 300mm F2.8 IS, at f2.8 using tripod on a wimberley head II and shooting in S Raw. In S Raw, I was able to get continuos 44 shots without buffer filling up. I selected centre focus point and left all settings in standard mode.
Of the 44 shots 1 as blur and the 2nd shot was only slightly blur and that was when my son slowed down to watch cross traffic of cars coming along. I repeated the test and I basically got the same result. Each time he slowed slightly to look at traffic, thats where I got the 1 to 2 slightly blur shots. As you can see the test was carried in very strong Australian sun as well. Another thing was my son was not running in a straight line as well. He was moving sort of from left of screen towards the right of screen. For that reason I think the camera did a fantastic job in returning such a high percentage of in focus shots.
I am very impress with the result as the pics were tack sharp.
Attached is one of the shots (worried of bandwidth) otherwise I would post the entire 44 shots.
For this who are interested in the individual pictures here they are 44 individual pictures for download. Thanks to Matthew Sauk for hosting it
Please note I am do not proclaim to be an expert with this kind of testing, I am just posting the results using the new Ai Servo test to share with those people who unfortunately have not receive their cameras yet or want to know how this new camera would perform. I am personally very impressed with the results that I obtained from this test. What I found that the sharp images were very sharp as well, may be it is the 16mp sensor or maybe it is from the much improved predictive AI Servo. Be the judge yourself when you download the pictures.
Conclusion
It is certainly a exceptional camera, with great High ISO, excellent focusing, excellent HD video, excellent LCD, Auto ISO even in manual mode and heaps additional new features. What more can I say.
Considering this beautiful baby is not much more than what I paid for my D60 some 7 years ago. I am just over the moon. With a camera like this, I just cannot complaint.

Can you post one of the full-frame AI servo shots? Even better, use the Canon software to overlay the focus points? I'd like to see how much contrast was where the focus point was.

Thanks for the update, Perry! It's hard to believe that shot is just an sRAW. Sounds like the camera is predicting constant speed when those two frames got blurred. I'm wondering if tweaking with the sensitivity would dial that in? But, only 2 frames out of 45 not being perfect is some kind of miracle. Looks like things are shaping up well for the 1D Mark IV (ISO, IQ, and now AF). If the sRAWs are that good, I bet the mRAWs are great.

Hi Fedelity,
I repeated the test of the running and the 3rd test I got about 5-7 blur shots and the 4th test I got about 3. But the sharp shots are very very sharp
I also tried the auto iso and works very well. I love this camera. I really need to do more ai servo test. I am not a BIF expert and I better let other experts perform the test. For my needs this camera is nothing short of awesome

Thanks for the update and info Perry. I'm getting mine the first week after the New Year

If you set the camera to mRAW, how many frames do you get before hitting the buffer? As I asked in your other IV thread, I'd also be interested in your opinion on how the camera handles clearing the buffer.

Thanks for the post Perry. My MK4 is coming the first week of January. I have high hopes for the AI Servo AF mechanism. No reason to doubt it unless proven otherwise. Loved my MK3's performance but sold it for the MK4.

Perry,
Looks like it is going to be a fine addition to Canon's arsenal! The AF in moving subjects looks to be awesome!!
Thanks for all your hard work!! It is appreciated by many of us!!

Good to see we are getting comparison shots finally. Now for my questions compared to when i had troubles with my mk iii. I really didn't have troubles with the type of shots you did there, but if you get an opportunity i'm curious as to tracking inside a darker gym type environment with both lateral and vertical in frame tracking. when i had stuff coming directly at me or going directly away i never really had any problems.
thanks for the test shots and any help/comparisons you might be able to give us.

Thanks, Ron
Hi Ron,
I saw your post and I did test it but overlooked posting it. Well in mRAW I got to about 40/41 images before the buffer started to fill up the it continues to shoot more images at a slower rate. In sRaw when buffer fills up it also continues to shoot but at a slightly faster rate.
and in Normal raw the clearing of buffer is the slowest.
Remember that I was only using Sandisk Extreme 4, I presume using the Sandisk Pro series it would be faster again as those cards are twice the speed of my extreme 4.

John
John I don't use the canon software and I have never loaded their software. So I wont be able to do that.

That sounds very good, Perry. I hope the camera will continue to perform well for you.
Incidentally, based on those few initial tests, have you been able to notice any difference between your MkIII and MkIV AF Servo ?
