p.3 #1 · Vivitar Series 1, 70-210mm/3.5 Kiron

I almost bought one of those S-1 200/3.5 AF lenses years ago on ebay. Any pics to share that were taken with it wide open?

Elp!! My vivi seem to have developed strange glow.
I haven't noticed that in Sweden, but I was taking shots of Yabusame show here in Japan and looking at my shots (well, I am rather crap at MF right now so this might be the problem) I can't help but feel a little worried...

Have a look:

The shot is taken at ISO400, I believe the aperture is F8 and shutter 1/1600. The motion is linear and I was tracking the guy as well as I possibly could. No chance to fit a tripod in that crowd. Had to hang on to the tree..

This type of "glow" is more prevalent with lenses used at their widest apertures. Are you sure the aperture was physically closed down to f8? In other words, the aperture ring may have been set to f8 but actually been at the widest setting. While looking into the end of the lens verify aperture control several times at different zoom settings and with the lens tipped in both horizontal and vertical positions. This should reveal any aperture problems.

Pengland: I am quite sure it was set. I do frequently play around with the lens and see the blades open and close (weird fetish, eh?). Having said that, I could have inadvertently turned the aperture ring while shooting. That would explain quite shallow DOF I got at approximately 85mm...or...hmm...

I just picked up the 70-210/3.5 version Series 1 lens today. Can't wait to put it on my GH1 and see what it can do.

Hardly. More like 2:1. You're thinking of a different camera/lens combination.

I think he was being rhetorical.

I have a few that seem like a 10:1 ratio too.

....and a couple pics with the 2nd Tokina version of the Series 1 70-210mm f3.5 wide open shows some aberrations...but not enough to worry about.

Thank you....Those are just part of a collection....mostly shoot modern AF above 300mm...but occasionally take a few of these oldies out for some exercise...which I was prompted to do a couple of weeks ago when someone was asking about the Pentacon 5.6/500 over at mflenses.com....usually it's rare that I might shoot over 50 meters with long glass, usually a lot closer then that...anyway,someone asked how the lens does at a couple of nautical miles....a few pics at the link below,I was surprised the lens did this well in the hazy conditions....scroll down to the sixth through 12th pix of the submarine, ship and ferry.

Depp I just found this thread. What a fantastic collection of these great old lenses. Believe it or not I found a 70-210 3 weeks ago packed away with some of my father's Canon film equipment and some darkroom equipment. He passed away in July of 1978 so my Mother must have packed this away in the fall of that year. In it's original box wrapped with newspaper and plastic wrap. It looks like new, I had no idea what I had but I do now, wow, much thanks for all the information.

Bifurcator...collected the whole lineup of Meyer Optik telephotos and super-telephotos...now I'm working on the collection of the chrome Meyer Optik lenses...the 4/300 Meyer Optik Orestegor in the center has better resolution and contrast then the 5.5/400 Meyer Optik Telemegors in the rear...but the 5.5/400 has a uniquely pleasing characteristic to the images....the 5.6/500 however is the sharpest of the three and a touch sharper then the 4/300 at infinity and for closeups.

Thanks Krosavcheg.....BTW,those were all shot wide open pointed into the sun,AFAIC the Vivitar S-1 70-210's handle flare and ghosting well....shot wide open and at 1600 ISO because it requires high shutter speeds to even come close to stopping the wings.Without flash 1/800 is usually the minimum shutter speed....1/1250 sec. is preferred.

Hummingbirds can be extremely skittish...got tired of trying to get good captures in the gardens....started baiting them in recently...next is to hang some honeysuckle cuttings and use an eyedropper to put sugar water in the blossom to bait them....surrounded by three strobes....BTW to use speedlights, make sure the hummer is tasting the flower or water to make the first shot, then they become used to the flash...if you use flash before or as they approach, they get scared away and don't return...

I've even shot them at dusk or after it's dark outside...though I had to train them first to do this...hummers require a considerable amount of food to produce all the energy they expend and keep warm at night...so till they get used to you, don't take pictures in the early evening or at night or they get scared away when they need to eat the most.

Meyer Optik Görlitz Orestegor 4/300 with tubes...100% crops
