p.1 #1 · 5D Mirror Fix -- What Does It Look Like?

I was thinking of dropping off my 5D at Canon Irvine for the mirror reinforcement/fix.
I checked Canon's service bulletin on this
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=215&modelid=11933&keycode=2112&id=55659
and it's not clear from their picture what is added and what is simply
part of the original mirror assembly. Maybe the 5D I bought used has already
had the fix. Here are two pics of my mirror. If you have had the fix on your
5D mirror, please someone let me know if mine has had the fix or not. Many thanks.

Tim

Unfortunately I don't have the answer... However I'm in the same boat as you and I am very curious since the mirror in my 5D looks exactly the same as yours.... I have a pic right here

I think the answer is no, the mirror has not yet been reinforced, but I'm waiting for
confirmation.

your mirror does not have the reinforcement on it yet. Its two thin strips of metal next to those big chunks on the sides. I am 100% positive.

Do all 5D's need this reinforcement or were there a certain batch of defective units? (Curious because I use 2x 5D classic bodies)

I had the mirror in my 5D reinforced last May. It took 10 days including shipping. My focusing screen and CMOS were spotless when I sent it in. The only gotcha is their "complimentary" cleaning made both focusing screen and CMOS filthy. I had to screw around with it for hours and, although I got most of it off, it was never as clean.

Apparently high heat and humidity account for a high percentage of failures. The counter girl at Canon HAwaii said I musta been among the last to bring in their 5D. Almost everybody else had the mirror come loose.

Could you perhaps post a picture of your reinforced mirror? Because I can't make much out of the official picture on the Canon website....

uhm nevermind....

Only some units need it, but Canon has never revealed which units do.

What I am concerned with is that Canon will disassemble the mirror assembly
and then put it back in with slightly different alignment, messing with my
focus screen calibration or even causing mirror collision with some of my Contax Zeiss
lenses.

Does Canon apply the metal reinforcement strips in place? Really don't want to mess
with what is not broken now, but would not enjoy having a mirror malfunction on a
big vacation.

I just noticed in the pictures I just took that the dark area where the adhesive affixes the mirror to the frame looks significantly bigger on the fixed mirror. Maybe they add more adhesive too

Really all units need to be looked at, the glue they used was consistent from unit one of production until they found out they had a problem and they changed glue and added reinforcement bars. The glue breaks down over time caused by heat and humidity. You don't want to mess around with this because if that mirror comes loose while you are shooting it could damage the shutter, sensor, and who knows what. Yours has clearly not had the fix because when repaired there will be a black metal strip that peaks out from underneath the black mounting bars. I sent both of mine into New Jersey and from time of UPS pickup to return was Tuesday to Friday and they were letter perfect.

Ditto - Mine done in Irving same relative time frame.
Mine also came back dirty on the mirror and sensor.
It took a few wet eclispe cleans and it actually appeared more like oil drop
than particulate matter.
I assumed it was done in a dirty shop and never was a "complimentary"
cleaning even mentioned.

I understand ALL 5D classic units have this problem and its the glue that dries out over time. Thev 5D Mkii is not effected since it has similar clips from original design.

Strange, my 5D's sensor was pretty dirty with a lot of stuck on dust specks that blowing wouldn't get rid of when I brought it in. It was perfectly clean when I got it back.

Well, I dropped off my 5D at Canon Irvine today, so I hope everything goes smoothly.
I happened to be in Orange County for a couple of days, so I figured it was as good
a time as any to get the mirror mod done.

I've heard mixed things, but is it necessary to have proof of purchase or anything when having this done at Canon?

I bought my 5D second-hand, and since I live just next door to Irvine, I figure I might as well do this soon.

No documentation required. The fix is essentially a recall, not just a warranty
repair.

Dropped it off Monday, they were done on Tuesday. Shipped Wednesday.

Got my 5D back from Irvine today. Cursory check shows no problems. Looks like
they added the little metal bars on the mirror without messing anything up. I haven't
done much to check if the sensor is squeaky clean, but images look fine so far.
Mirror does not hang on my CZ 35-70. Good job, Canon. Super fast service.
