Does anybody know if the 5D mirror fix blocks light from the edges of the viewfinder? The little metal strips (along the mirror edges) that secure the "fixed" mirror in place look as if they could block light from reflecting up into the viewfinder along the extreme edges. Has anyone noticed this?
I just had the mirror fail on one of my 5D's and I don't wish to lose any additional viewfinder coverage thanks to the mirror fix. The 5D has 96% coverage, which seems like a lot but I still notice composition discrepancies between the viewfinder and actual images and I'm worried that the fix might add to this problem.
Alanu: I'm surprised to hear that your 5D came back dirty. The two lenses that I've had repaired at the Canon Canada service center (in Mississauga, Ontario) over the last couple years both came back pristine, including free from dust that had accumulated inside the 70-200 f/2.8L IS and had nothing to do with the damaged pieces. I hope my camera comes back in a similar pristine condition.
But the question still stands: does the mirror fix block a bit of light from reaching the viewfinder due to the little metal strips that are added to hold the mirror in place? (See my original posting of the question a little up the page). Any input on this from people who have had their 5D mirror fixed would be appreciated. Thanks.
I believe the answer is, No, the strips don't block the image to the viewfinder.
At least I don't notice it if it does. This should be of little concern. If you must
include something in the shot, just frame it with some margin on the sides and
crop in post.
Hi. As I will be getting 5D soon, I am also concern about mirror fix. Do you know, if Canon ever applied the fix to the new cameras? Mine starts with 3, so is pretty late version, I was hoping that maybe latest manufactured 5Ds had the fix applied already? Can anybody confirm or deny this? Thank you

The official Service Notice (link here) makes no mention of serial number differences. Also, the service notice was issues long after the last 5D was manufactured...hence it applies to all 5D's.
I sent mine in before coming here to Micronesia, thank god I did. It is often 100 percent humidity, day after day but then with 400 inches of rain a year, why wouldn't it be.
