Wow! I am shocked!
The FIRST C/Y that does NOT catch my finicky 5DMkII mirror.
Hmm, I forget what adapter this is, it was on my C/Y 35-70/3.4
And then, I not sure if the C/Y 85/1.4 catches the mirror.
Experimentation time!

Just picked up my C/Y Zeiss 35/1.4 today.
Mine says Made in West Germany, so I guess this is an AE version?
Wow, just looking at it, I am certain my 5DMkII is gonna have problems.
The rear element protrudes much more so than my converted Minolta Rokkor 58/1.2
AND, I have problems w/ my C/Y Zeiss 35-70/3.4
Sigh, oh well, I will know for certain tonight.
Maybe I should go the Leitax route, instead of all these various adapters I have...
Hello,
Any other owners of the AEG versions of this fabulous glass?
How is the aperature ring action on your copy?
Mine is very loose, way to easy to turn.
It does stop at the detents, though, just barely.
Is there an easy correction for this, an adjustment?

My copy is an old "beater" AEG. The aperture action is a bit soft on mine, but not enough to bother me. If you remove enough screws on the back of the lens (from memory, I think you have to remove the curved block, the bayonet, then the back flange screws under the bayonet), you can lift off the aperture ring and see the mechanism: a ball-bearing supported by a leaf spring (? or maybe a coil spring, I don't recall) that clicks in grooves on the inside of the aperture ring. Possibly re-bending the leaf spring or cleaning and re-greasing the bearing/grooves will fix the problem. However, if the problem is too much wear on the aperture ring grooves, then you might be out of luck.
Has anyone Leitaxed their MMJ? I went to order it today and now I'm unsure if I should order the wide mount or the narrow. It doesn't have the tab the narrow mount is supposed to have, but the mount itself looks more like the narrow mount illustrated in the photos than the wide.
Any advice appreciated. I'll get an e-mail out to David as well, but I'm hoping to get it ordered tonight and, given the time difference, I don't think I'll get a response back from him before bedtime.

Brad, going for a second opportunity again with the C/Y 35/1.4?
Wondering if the MMJ's IQ is that much different than the AEG for this lens?
Yep. After playing with the new Rok 35 and my buddy's generous three day loan of his ZF.2 Distagon, I sat down and compared the shots I'd taken with the broad range of fast 35's I've used, and decided that I gave up the C/Y too quickly. It wasn't my intention to end up with the MMJ, it was just what Paul had and he was willing to work out a trade.
So I haven't gone back and tried to duplicate any shots I had from the AEG for a direct comparison, but my impression is that the MMJ has higher contrast wide open, which makes the in-to-out-of focus transitions a little rougher but the color rendition a hair more pleasing (though no more accurate). There's some slight bokeh differences, but honestly I can't tell if it's the shape of the aperture or the increased contrast that causes it. I'm not seeing a noticable difference in flare resistence (that I can't attribute to having a hood for the lens now, anyway), CA, or distortion. I would've been happy using either, but I'm very pleased the MMJ can use the Leitax solution. Adapters in general are a real crap-shoot, but that seems doubly true for the C/Ys.

I had Jim Buchanan covert my un-Leitax-able AE CY 35/1.4 to Canon EF, which worked out great, so lack of good mount options is not a reason people should avoid the AE.
Whoa, I didn't know this was available.
I knew he converted Canon FD, and Minolta SRT mounts.
I will save up my pennies to have this performed on my Made in Germany version!
Though, amazingly, this seems to be the FIRST C/Y lens my finicky 5DMkII "likes", strange...

Thanks for the comparison info.
Which lens hood do you have for this lens?
What were your feelings about the new 35/1.4? I guess you like the old one better?

Excellent point, Michael, and I certainly didn't mean to imply people should avoid the AE. As I said, I would be happy with either.

Who puts an abacus on a playground? Was there some sort of meeting where someone actually suggested, "You know what kids can't get enough of? The giant abacus. Tested higher than swings and slides."
to be fair, my daughter loves abacuses. but, she is also only 9 months old, she also loves ripping up skymall. i doubt the obsessive interest in abacuses will last till she is big enough to use that one.

thanks for the notes on the various 35/1.4s.
Heh. You may be raising an accountant, you know. Or an IRS employee (though I hear they finally replaced the abacus with an adding machine).
