Maybe you should try the 5D.

I'm giving up on the 7D. I haven't been able to get a photo that delighted me till now. Maybe the camera is too advanced for me, maybe I only deserve to upgrade to some xxD model. Either way ... the 7D will be on its way back tomorrow. Now, other than the 40D with its low-res LCD and preview image, I don't have a model to upgrade to, from my 30D, within a budget of less than $2000.

Before you send it back there is no such thing as too advanced. There is always the easy button. Have you posted your issues somewhere else? Let's start here. What mode do you shoot in? If you could post a few image you don't like it is easier for people to help you.

It's probably a very nice camera and I'm not able to use it properly. Either way, it doesn't seem to be working for me. There are a handful of very nice images in this thread - just a handful - so, obviously, better photographers than me are making good use of the 7D. I am considering the 5D, 5DII and also the D300s and D700. Let's see ..

If you are making nice images with your 30D now there is no reason you shouldn't be with the 7D. No matter what camera you buy you will likely end up making the same images, nice or not. So my advice to you is stick with what you've got and focus on your photography rather than your equipment...it seems it's you that needs work to make quality images and not the camera.

I agree.

The 40D is actually a very good camera in my experience. My 40D comes very close to my 5D in terms of IQ; the main difference is of course the 1.6 vs FF format. (and that the 40D is a much more responsive camera).

If you need more mp, better AF, video (or perhaps high ISO performance) then an upgrade to the 7D might make sense, otherwise your better off sticking with the 40D in my veiw.

I looked at some of the images you posted here. Your camera may be front focusing and may need to go to Canon Service to be calibrated. Back in 10 days and as good as new.

I moved from the 5dii to the 7d and I was a little nervous about how the 135 l would perform. However, I am quite pleased. Here are some shots in my backyard with two of my kids:

Also, the on board flash is not too bad (shot with the Sigma 50 1.4):

Can't anyone else share their 100% crops? Just put them next to your shots...

It seems to take much more sharpening and much more saturation increase, levels, etc to get it to the same kind of output as minor tweaks from my 30D. Maybe it's a diff between DPP and ACR/PS.

That's one on my list now.

I can upload a bunch of RAW images to my web server and let one of you tweak it and show me what I'm doing wrong. I mostly shoot in Aperture or Shutter Priority.

Probably very true. I haven't used a fancy new camera. I went from the D60 to the 30D and have stayed there.

Maybe I need to spend more time MA-ing my lenses.

In any case, please don't let me make this a thread against the 7D. I love to see a handful of folks here post beautiful images, mostly the folks with the highest quality lenses like the 500L. The rest of the photos posted here, including mine, look like they came out of a P&S. I suspect it's just a matter of skills not high enough. But, it's nice to see others enjoy their 7Ds.

Anil, don't give up yet! I've had mine for about a month and now finally have gotten it set up to suit my personal taste. It takes a while just to become familiar with how the AF works, and knowing that will certainly help you to get the shots you want. I moved from a 30D to the 7D and, while my posted pics certainly don't show it (yet!), I know that it was a great move for me. Work with it a little more and see what happens.

Before this I was not sure about your history but you had DSLR before. Since you are not shooting in Green Box or CA modes you are probably on center point focus. Just in case you are on something else get out of that and go to center point. Thanks for being patient at this point as I try to narrow it down.

Did you do the $5 serial number test yet? Tape or put the bill somewhere, put your camera on a tripod, mirror lock up, cable release. Distance to bill about 1 foot to 10mm. 10ft to 100mm.
Pick a lens that has that widest DOF. An 85 1.8 is good because it will really show up but any lens will do.

Set your selected lens aperture to the widest F stop. Focus on the bills serial number. Take 10 shots in a row. Be careful to give plenty of time for the camera to settle after you raise the mirror to prevent vibration.

View the images by blowing them up on the LCS screen. All should be fairly similar. There may be some slight focus variation as no system is perfect. They should be close. If the focus is moving around your unit may need calibration at Canon Factory Service. It is suspected a few during the first production run were not calibrated correctly. Specifically the AF assembly which required an electrical adjustment on my 7D.

I would do this test several times. Also I'd do a few 10 sequence series and turn the lens barrel to infinity before each exposure.

One more thing to try. If you have FW 1.0.9 or better take a few images of the serial number in live view, contrast detect (on tripod, etc). Live views focusing is pretty much perfect so it will show you what your images should look like. Live view uses a different method to focus because the mirror is locked up. AFM does not work here.

And yes I'd be glad to look at some of your raw images. It was a tough month for me but I'm glad I sent mine in.
