The limiting factor for fps is probably going to be the mirror, not the electronics. The EOS-1v film camera shoots up to 10 fps. Granted, that technology has been around for a while, so they might be able improve it a bit. But I don't see much over 10 or 12 fps with a moving mirror. I can see the possibility of much higher fps when shooting in Live View mode.

Significant improvements seem to skip a generation.
That may have been the case when Canon was leading the way in the DSLR market, in reference to performance...those days are gone. I think it's safe to say if they don't go big this time around they may as well go home. Look at the 7D as an example...Canon is making a legitimate attempt to regain momentum in this department.
Makes sense.. Not that I'm a believer in the "superstitious 4" thing but a "1DV" would make sense if Canon are going to promote a new Digic V processor (would that be Digic 5, or V?) and Video: ..the big one.
I did not get that feeling from the Canon photographer because the full quote was "SHOOT IT WITH THE 1DsIII - IT'S STILL THE BEST CAMERA CANON MAKES."
Canon will make a giant leap when they develop a new body, ala the 1DIII, when they can design all the new video/audio and 85pt AF in without forcing the issue.

Why not!? We should have a prediction-off. Can't hurt, right?
1DIV:
18mp APS-H w/ 1.6x crop mode
I hope it's not APS-H as it will be a defeat, but I guess I'm prepared to be disappointed again.. now if it was 18MP FF sensor at speed, I'd be happy....
zero chance on the 1.6x crop mode... I think that was always a lame attempt by Nikon to let people use DX lenses. Canon has never allowed that, hence absolutely no crop..
ISO100-12800 (L-50, H-25600, H2-51200, H3-102400)
Dual Digic IV (possibly V)
~12fps
New 45pt AF (i.e. 7D)
Updated metering system (i.e. 7D)
In camera flash commander
1080i
3" 920K LCD
I'd also love to see an AF system that can handle the ability to use multiple focus points when using a TC on a lens at or narrower than f/8...a rather large wish I suppose
Probably 10 FPS and only "up to" 51200 ISO, but no real disagreement on the other as none of it would be a surprise. Before I ever read what others had said, I suggested the 7d AF was a new prototype, so I'm sticking with that belief. N.B. I also think it was around BEFORE the 5d2 came out, but Canon wanted to "cheap out" on the 5d2, hence they used the old stuff..
Regarding your comments" I think it's safe to say if they don't go big this time around they may as well go home. Look at the 7D as an example...Canon is making a legitimate attempt to regain momentum in this department."
Canon is already "second fiddle" as the saying goes. They lost their first place standing in 2007 (actually it was lost before, it just showed up then) and I'm pretty sure Nikon/Sony will trounce them soon (with their next releases). Canon is playing catch up on most things (AF, ISO, body features, etc.), but I don't care about video....

I'm not quite sure if I'd toss them into the "second fiddle' role as I find both manufacturers are targeting different sections of the market as a whole (IOW the entire Camera system itself)...so I'd say they are neck and neck atm. Thats not to say Canon hasn't lost some ground, because clearly they have, but the release of the 7D shores it up even tighter and shows Canon still has the ability to regain an advantage. The fact that Nikon has 'caught up' over the past few years makes it seem as though Canon has lost the race. I find they are very much still in it based on what they did with the 7D, although only time will tell. And FWIW I do not see Sony becoming a major player quite yet--possibly within 10 or so years IMO.
Well, if we're to take the invitation posted over at canonrumors seriously, the image certainly looks like a 1D body to me...adjusting the gamma of the image reveals a pixelated "EOS-1" where it should be on the camera body. FWIW.

You're quite right about 12fps, hence the '~' and 'possibly digic V'--we'll see that they can do with that I also can't imagine the body weighing in at under 16mp. 51pt AF isn't out of question either but for what ever reason I still feel they'll stick to 45pt--obviously that's just a gut feeling. As for the flash commander, why don't you think it will be implemented? Seems like a no-brainer, IMO.
It's time to ditch the 12 yo 45 pt AF (ok it's officially 19pt, but it's still a derivative of the EOS 3 AF 45pt system). For an improved zone AF system like the 7D's I'd suggest a new AF of > 51 points but the ability like the 1D II to manually limit the number of points to say 15 or so, New AF would also have much greater coverage than the 7D's.
Don't you need a pop-up flash to have a flash commander?

Northlight was reporting this or last year that Canon were working on a brand-new AF system for the 1 series, so hopefully you'll get that

Canon rumors reports [CR1] the new 1D moniker will skip the IV, as some have said, and go straight to the V...how accurate that is no one will know. They also speak about a new 70-200/2.8 IS II which is also CR1. Obviously this could all be a bunch of jibba jabba then again there is one day left to go until the 20th here in the States.
