If you could mount a telephoto lens on it, actually a great idea.
This is why some people have adapted P&S cams and video cams with small sensors to telescopes, for excellent reach.
Ok, so SLR to you is nothing more than MPX's and that same as phone with lens attached somehow could do same shots?

Conrad, some people in that 7D focus issue thread claimed that you oversharpened some of your photos, what do you have to say to that?
Hmmm... maybe I did, maybe I didn't. I never said the images were straight from the camera. They all had some PP done. They can say what they wish, but what I was intending to show with all of my efforts is that the images produced CAN look like mine, no matter what I did in PP. I used to have a 30D and could never get these kind of images when the subject was this far away. Now I can. That was my only intention. Perhaps people expect a bit too much without really thinking that the camera and lens only gives something to work with, THEN you have to do the work in PP. Oversharpened? Perhaps. But I like the way they look. Others say I over-do vibrance, well I like that too. Its subjective. Purists will say they want crystal clear images at 100% crop. Well who prints 100% crops really? I think 100% crops are only good for identification purposes. Purists will also argue that the images should be tack sharp without PP. Then why do we have the Unsharpen Mask? Darkroom techniques are a hundred years old. They don't think Ansel Adams did everything he could in the darkroom to make his images pop before he printed them? I'm sorry let me get off this soapbox now I want to say I am far from offended so don't get me wrong. These are my opinions and everyone is entitled to their own. To me, a little sharpening was needed, so I added my version of a little sharpening. Maybe I need to get eyeglasses I appreciate and respect all C&C and will in fact try to see which images look over-sharpened, again so I can learn and grow in my photography. Thanks n0b0 for bringing this up my friend!

Not exactly. I'll try a different version for our common amusement:
If you put the tiny sensor of your 10MP phone cam inside a DSLR, and mount the 300/2.8 on that camera, the resulting image will blow away the handful of pixels you get if you crop a 40D image to the same FOV.

Conrad--I think you're photos are beautiful, stunning, and really do show some of the capabilities of the 7D. Thanks for sharing them!
Here is a thread which I've started on actually testing the 7D AF capabilities:

Also, when does shooting distance and local atmospherics start to degrade your birding images at 400mm? (I have the same 400mm F5.6L lens) Thanks!
Ooooh... I hate atmospheric anomalies and how they just ruin everything! When there's heat mirage water vapors or smog or anything reflecting sunlight around your subject, be prepared for disappointment. There is no substitute for a clear day.
Let me see, my best shooting distance (which just got a tiny bit farther with 18MP) is for a duck sized subject - 40 feet max if I want to post something exceptional. 20 feet max if I want to PRINT something exceptional. If the subject was the size of a hummingbird, 15 feel max if I wanted to include some BG. 9 feet max if I wanted to crop the hummer and print it. If its something HUGE like a great blue heron, I'm back far away as I love the wingspan shots as they take off so I'm back 30 to 40 feet to get the spread, but if I wanted super sharp head portraits, I'm up close to 9 feet again for maximum detail.
So anything FURTHER than these distances on my 400mm and I'm going to have to "oversharpen" again I will join in your AF thread when I get back from this meeting. I'm supposed to be at work! I hope this helps my friend and I hope your AF problems soon are a thing of the past.
Now that I read my question again, I feel like a reporter doing an interview.
Just to make it clear, I don't like the purist way of doing anything. More often than not, I find that their method requires doing things the hard way without even considering the alternatives. Like no PP, no sharpening, no cropping, no HDR, no AF, etc.

u felt like a reporter and I felt like a politician busted in some scandal I had to defend! Hahhahha! Your point is clear man!

Keep shooting, I like your pics !
Haha!! Kiran, I feel like folks should really evaluate the image, the end result. Is the image pleasing? I hope so. To me is it worth printing? If it is then the gear has done its job. Did I oversharpen in PP? Maybe. But do I like it? Definately. Everyone's entitled to an opinion and we should take away something positive from each one. I learned today that sharpening should be done in moderation if folks see it, it must exist in some form. Don't get me wrong, I'm not offended. I just with folks would take it as an exercise in what 18MP can do with good PP techniques..(or bad )
Glad you like them Kiran. I will be calling you again soon to go shoot so you better get some practice tracking them burds!

Nice images, and that 7d seems awesome. But you can't compare it to a 1Ds, which is a seven year old camera.
I don't think I ever compared it to the 1D that I know of regarding anything but MP Jeff. I just said it shines in the sense of what it can offer. It is a wonderful addition to my gear especially for the price. I hope you didn't miss my point my friend. all I meant was if the subject was tiny on a 1D, it is nearly impossible to use. But that's not to take away from what it can do if the subject is near full frame.
if only the 7D had a larger APS-H sensor and similar MP count.
but the shots are oversharpened and look well... like they're cropped then way over-sharpened. the somewhat unsightly background blur is magnified/zoomed too.
