Yeah, but this thread is about cropability, and with specs like that the 7D still wins

Right, didn't say it wouldn't. I was speaking in terms of complete performance, which matters to me more

More fantastic examples Conrad, you appear to have your new best friend really dialed in. No question from my tests that the 7D has some resolving power and one fine AF module. With this as a forerunner the 1D4 has got to be nice but at what price? The 7D seems to do pretty much everything needed for a whole lot of people. Continued best of luck.

How are you processing these? DPP? Any NR? I wonder if the pixel level noise becomes a real problem with such huge crops.

No kidding. I had no desire what so ever for this camera because I have a 1D3, but after seeing your many pages of samples I now would like to have one. Thanks alot a$$!

BTW your samples are freaking amazing! Thanks for sharing.

Hehe... thanks for the kind words Kelly. And I'll try not to be such an a$$ next time and post some pi$$ poor images just for you.

Oh course I use noise reduction! Who doesn't? All kidding aside, I've been asked what my workflow is. So these are my steps:

1. Open in ACR

2. While holding the CTRL down, I adjust exposure to recover the whites, then black level to retain the darks.

3. I recover any leftover whites I can.

4. I adjust contrast, boost vibrance a bit, boost clarity a bit.

5. I adjust levels and curves

6. I turn all ACR noise reduction OFF and sharpening OFF

7. I open the image now in PS

8. The following steps are then done on their own layer as not to destroy the original image.

9. I run the image through Noise Ninja plug-in

10. Then apply sharpening just once (cause my 400mm is so damn good )

11. Crop being sure to leave room for the subject to breathe (newbies don't do this enough especially for BIF)

12. Resize to post

13. Post on FM and await hopefully positive comments but more importantly, listen to negative ones!

14. Go to bed.

I hope this helps anyone wanting to know what I do to get these images. Cheers everyone!

I use Manual Mode center AF points that form a + symbol. I'm sorry I still have not read the manual but I hope you know which one I'm talking about. I have not tried the other settings yet.

Not a problem. I've started using the one where there are 9 active AF points whenever a BIF is in blank sky. It works GREAT!

The 7D really is tremendous...

The only downside is that we'll see even more BiF pictures. I swear they all start to look the same after a while.

Nice shots, Conrad This is why I'm banking on a +16mp APS-H 1DIV with increased high ISO performance. The 7D looks like a fantastic piece of kit, no doubt, but you've gotta believe the 1DIV is going to be that much better in both of the said departments...at least one should hope

If we assume that the 1DMkIV will build on the features & technologies of the 7D then we have a lot to look forward to.

I like the noise patterns of the 7D. Looks nicer and more pleasing than my 40D's noise.

I love how the cropped #1 bird eye glows with color. Sweet.

Must resist... Must resist... the 40d is good enough. I just need to wait for February. February is just 4 months away.

A blessing in disguise! By then, whatever issues with the 7D will hopefully be resolved.

I always wondered how everyone gets to tight BIF shots... now I know!

Really? Well most folks who produce really really detailed shots are actually very close to the subject and fill the frame. These are just examples of what one can get when cropping an 18MP camera.
