Hahhah!! dude thats classic. Ya bring him the strap. Tell him to hang it around his neck and imagine the performance. Hahhahha!!! Oh man I hope he doesn't read this. I'm gonna be helping him move into his new house tomorrow. Hahhaha!
When you see him tomorrow ask him to touch your shoulder. After he does tell him the D7 had hung there.
However, most of it is fairly even and chroma noise, so it would clean up quite nice.
I've always found chroma noise is easier to clean than luminance noise.
People are forgetting that this is really a 60D camera. Its not intended to be the king of ISO. You have to read between the lines. Chuck Wesfall also said the 50D ISO 3200 shots would look like the 40D ISO 1600 shots.....did they? NO!
I think the 7D is probably there. I dont know yet...dont have one in hands. Just realize that this is a $1600 body thats really should be called the 60D.
That said, its pretty capable, and outshines the 50D by far. And its not much more than the 50D was when you look at what you get.
I come from a 1d3, so this wont cut it in terms of ISO performance. But I am looking forward to the new metering system for sure, the new AF system and a little more res would be ok too, oh and I really cant wait for a real LCD. I think if the rumors are true for the 1D4 at 1.3x 16mp's, if the noise just stayed the same as it is now but more resolution, I'd be happy. Cant wait for the new AF

If it's 2 stops better than your 40D then it must be at least that much better than my 20D.
Woohoo!
I have a 40D too, and have been trying to guestimate the stops of noise improvement. Seems like 2 stops @ 1600 (6400 noise on 7D may be comparable to 1600 on 40D).
What I'd like to learn more about... I'm comfortable shooting anything @ 400 ISO on the 40D. Will I be as comfortable shooting anything @ 800 (or even 1600 ISO??) on the 7D? Honestly, it would be worth a LOT to shoot ISO800 worry-free.
sounds like w/ chroma noise being easier to PP out, this might be a two stage answer. "if you PP w/ something like noiseninja, then 40D 400 is about 7D 800; otherwise, no improvement".
Conrad: I'm still jealous! ;-) Great looking shots. One request, can you post 100% crops of the NN cleanup as you did with the other non-NN herons? Thanks.
Thanx for that link, Michael. The Liquidstone's feedback is interesting, albeit related to a preproduction (?) unit, because it has a direct impact on my desire to buy the camera or not.
(Some time ago I have kinda largely abandoned photography of birds against vacant sky, if it can be helped at all, so the camera AF system hold on targets with non-vacant background makes it or breaks it for me. )
Conrad Tan:
Well Michael, ISO200 is noise free IMHO and ISO400 is almost noise free.
Thank you Conrad. I have seen a few references that indicate that noise characteristics are different in ISO 200-800 and ISO 1600-3200 ranges. In other words, the noise in higher ISO range seem to be much improved, comparing with other crop cameras and not so in the lower range.
