The "problem" with the X1 is that you can't change lenses. You only have a 35mm equiv f/2.8 lens.
I think Nikon would be "shooting themselves in the head" if they don't make this with inter-changeable lenses. They'd be gone within the next 2 decades.
nice thread going on. So, the revolution was meant so:
- everybody who was ever had film camera will buy it. Simply because most people who ever shot with film semi pro camera were more than today's moms with DSLR on auto mode. Most those people will buy it only based on name. That much revolution it will be.
- that leaves few pros who started with digital cameras. they will buy it because they will have to , because of NAS or.....
- everybody else buys it because others already have it . Guy or girl who showed it to us compared it to that people will see it as move from analog to digital except nobody will want to stay with their actual ones for "vintage" reasons. And the best is, that he or she was right (imo)! It is about that picture is still made by photographer and camera won't matter, it is more like, why to bang your head to steering wheel when you can have airbag . You just deserve it.
now thats all, but i can promise you that regardless of what camera you have, D70 to D3x you will jump on it. If you are on budget, start saving, because else you will be very sad until you can afford it or because it is cheaper then max your CC
Only ONE thing can be said for certain. That within the next calendar year, Nikon WILL come out with a body or bodies that will make those that switched over to Canon for a 5DMKII or a 7D weep for their mistake (and lack of patience). THAT I would gladly put money on. The rest is pure speculation.

I speculate that Nikon will release a new lens within the next 12 months! SAVE NOW!!!!!
I think the OP deserves an award for "stupid thread of the month".

Well, that sounds like a retro styled NIKKORMAT, doesn't it?
Kittyk, please just don't answer if I'm right.
BTW, when I saw the new M9 I thought, where the hell is my digital FM2? Obviously there is no need that FX digital cameras have to be bigger and heavier than 35mm SLRs used to be. Even my D700 is too big and heavy. Maybe someone listened.
and say it warms up in our segment... just warms. you know yet nothing. but you will scream.
and i sold three my AIS lenses where was laying lot of moneys and which will be useless in single digit months later and bought 50 1.4G because it rocks
god, now i hope that somebody dont get heart attack because of me

Kitty, remember I told you that I will keep an eye on nikon rumor for you? Here it is: http://nikonrumors.com/
i am not saying anything again, but i would not jump out for that too high. if i would need so-so overpriced rangefinder there are plenty acceptable ones already

Wow, Nikon MX, we've heard that before.
Biggest problem I see is the current lenses. They aren't made for MF format use - too small, not a big enough image circle. Yes, a teleconverter (or wideconverter) could be used, but that begs the question, why would someone buy a MF camera and use a set-up that degrades resolution?
Or why would anyone buy a large MF camera body and basically use it in FX crop mode?
If Nikon does do it, they will need a host of new lenses to boot, so what's the difference if you shoot Nikon or not (kind of the premise of this thread)? You'll still have completely new lenses to buy, that, sure, via adapter will work with your existing equipment (of course, they'd be half-again as big as their FX counterparts).
So, if you're hinting at MX, yeah, it would be cool, but not something every photographer would need or want.

you are forgetting important things. one is, that optical converter can be made so that it dont damage quality. As long as lens is weakest point, it cannot be worse. Nano coated madness for 1000Eur? still worth it. Maybe some light loss, but not neccessarily big problem.
There would sure be new lenses, maybe with switch between short and long distance to sensor (MX, FX+DX), why not. What lenses you really need? I can live happy with FX equivalent of 28, 50, 105, 200

AIS lenses will be useless while a 1.4/50G rocks...referring to a camera with medium format backs... which will be very popular...sorry, that's beyond my imagination.
