This was posted on DPR and I think is a new review. Looks like he is using a production model... not indicated in review. Six samples.

Why then has he added a greek character beta to his review? I'd guess it's the usual pre production model that's making the rounds...

That ISO 6400 shot of the 200 f/2 lens looks pretty doggone good!

Oh man, if that's really what ISO6400 looks like, I guess I won't be needing full frame after all... That kind of noise would be so easy to get rid of with Dfine 2.0 selective NR, reduce the noise from the OOF area and leave the high frequency details alone. And no chroma noise!! well, very little anyway.

Although very good, that's a shot in bright light with no deep shadows. It's a low light scene with underexposed areas that'll be a real test. Still it's far better than I hoped.

Gabor at dpreview has shown the 7D trounces the D300s above ISO 800 for noise and is only marginally worse per pixel at ISO 200, equal at ISO 400, better at ISO 800. Not bad for 6MP extra, and when we use Brainiac's metrics it's even better and wins at all ISOs.

I read the 7D manual (PDF), looking for the audio clips feature (present on 1D MK3). I couldn't find it. Is it really missing?

I'm not a pro Whayne. For what I want to shoot, it's more than adequate. Besides, it's still a helluva lot better than my 450D.

One of the thing I'm really amazed of is the lack of chroma noise pattern that I see in my 450D ISO1600. God I hate that noise pattern...

Don't use Automatic, the strength of Dfine is the Control Points to reduce noise selectively with varying degree of NR strength.

Thanks... just downloaded and have got to get the manual out. I have NIK Viveza and am familiar with the Control Points but have to see how they work in DeFine.

Agreed. The reason I sold my 40D in favor of keeping the 5D classic was that the 40D didn't have as much latitude for pulling up shadow detail at ISO 400 and above. I use 400 a lot, and in some shooting situations, you have to rely on quickness rather than making exposure compensation adjustments before taking the shot. The 5D let me do that, and the 40D did not or at least not as much.

I hope that the 7D shows increased capability in those situations.

I can not belive this test 6400 7D File:
One example, the presentation of samples from IR, by thedigitalbean on page 41 in this thread.
http://akimagery.zenfolio.com/img/v2/p917742329.jpg

down right corner claimed 7D 6400

Make a comparsion and see its not so noisy as from above:
E7DhSLI06400_NR_OFF.JPG.jpeg 6400

Whats going on here? It has so much more noise in the comparison all cameras

I realize that I'm a full-frame snob ( ) but I would say that the 5D2 is the only one that appear to be useable at ISO 6400 in that example, headroom.

As your text suggests, more study is needed on this issue. 6400 is a pretty extreme test.

If you go to Page 42, I posted:

"Forgot to mention that in all of these LR's noise reduction was set to 0 (for both lum. and color) and all sharpening set to 0."

Even with NR set to 0 for in camera JPG, there is still some noise reduction (especially color noise reduction)) that gets performed which is why you really need the RAW file to get a good idea of the noise characteristics.

I was wondering about that too. I thought there were some microphone holes on the back side of the camera near the power switch, and I was hoping they were for audio memos. But maybe not....

I was reading a review yesterday, audio memo is not possible on the 7d...iirc.

edit:

There is no recoding of audio with stills, as there is on 1 Series cameras. A shame really, since this is so useful a feature, and it seems to have been omitted simply to keep from encroaching on 1 Series territory.

No that's the speaker for video playback... The omission of the voice annotations is one of the few missing things against the 1D series - something I'll gladly live with.

On my 5D2's I have the set button configured to start video recording. On the 7D you even have a dedicated video button. What's wrong with hitting that and speaking into the mic about the last shot? Seems like a non-issue to me.

Interesting, turn down the video quality while you are at it and you can do a quick video of the shooting location along with your commentary.

The only downside is that the video file will take up a ton more room than even just the audio note.

That dual zig zag sensor geometry first appeared in 5D1, and I'm not aware of it being used again until 7D.

The above citation is from the Canon technical blurb about the 7D. The 5D II has the same physical AF sensor as the 5D so it was used between...
