So, when will the first copies of this "awesome" camera be available for shipment? What's the last word that somebody might have heard out there? Thanks!

I called Murphy's Camera and they said the first were supposed to start shipping in the US the first week of October. We'll know when they arrive at the doorstep.

Here is a post on DPR which indicates he received his 7D and has a US address. His posting was messed up so he eventually posted some 3200 with NO NR... the images are on this thread...

At least one select local dealer here in Columbus (OH) is assured of getting (14) bodies in next week. They are all spoken for, however.

....but I would say that the 5D2 is the only one that appear to be useable at ISO 6400 in that example, headroom.

Absolutely! All those examples about how great 7D is (and it is not bad at all) are just showing how much better 5D mkII is. The only images that look good at > ISO 400

The 5D II is great but I would also like the extra reach of a "quality" crop camera though I most always prefer a full frame. Even FF is less than enough as I used to shoot mostly MF and 4X5 to 8X10 but you know, the crop cameras can do a lot. They just need to be used for the right purpose and I am hoping the 7D holds up.

I am looking forward to images from users on this forum.

Please post a few ISO 400, 800 and 1600 images (or links to RAW files). Composition doesn't matter, just good exposure and a little detail in the images. I just want to get a sense that this camera is better than what the 50D is producing.

There you have it... It costs more in the UK, so Canon's sent all their available supply there first!

Are you saying the 7D sensor is not that great after all? Hmmm...

I have yet to come across a single report that says the production copy behaves differently from a pre-production copy.

no, it's not strictly the sensor itself, just whether they carefully balance the readouts from it, even a few people got 5D2's that have the maze artifacts although hardly any copies had that defect, nothing general about the 5D2 at all.

so long as they do actually take care to balance the channels it should be a great APS-C sensor (something one would certainly hope they would do, although if many pre-pro copies don't have it balanced you might worry a little bit, but hard to believe they could be that foolish)

Well duh, they tossed us high precision for the center top, center middle and center bottom sensors working up to f/5.6 by incorporating interleaved horizontal line sensors at those positions into the cross type sensor.
Citing from CPN:
"f/5.6 sensors are especially good at predictive tracking focus, however, the designers wanted to find a solution that also offers high focus accuracy as well. Increasing focus accuracy can be achieved by using a higher resolution focus sensor however, simply increasing the pitch, and therefore resolution, of a single line too much leads to a lower signal to noise ratio in terms of light

sounds good, i forgot about that statement

I think I can live with that level of "damage" to the IQ...

it's actually pretty major damage

however, I don't believe it will be a problem with production cameras, at least not most of them, maybe one out of 10,000 or something. Out of all the 5D2 reports I've only ever seen 3 people mention they had the issue and one wouldn't imagine they would be sloppier with the 7D.

I was reading a review yesterday, audio memo is not possible on the 7d...iirc.

edit:

There is no recoding of audio with stills, as there is on 1 Series cameras. A shame really, since this is so useful a feature, and it seems to have been omitted simply to keep from encroaching on 1 Series territory.

yeah quite a shame, really, really useful for sports, but journalism or even in general too

but that's canon....

yeah, seems like the UK today, very limited in Canada tomorrow, and US not until next week (would've been cool to have had it for yanks-red sox game tomorrow). Usually they time release so it makes it for the Friday delivery in the US, but not this time. Maybe jsut as well, have a 15% off pre-order which is a good savings (although it said something about maybe in 2010.... so....)

Yeah... my supplier has no specifics but says next week. I was ready to pay FedEx Saturday delivery fee...:-)

that one is puzzling since they have held it out of even the 1 series and for a few generations now

the other stuff is just 1 series protection and Mark II, X+1XD protection
