p.5 #1 · Thoughts on Canon's future releases

I had never really heard about this '3d' product/idea but from what I gather it sounds like precisely what I would want. My 5d is very nice but what I really want for a body is full frame, hd video, weather sealing, higher dynamic range and no built in grip like the 1d models. That way I wouldn't need a little point n shooter for video, I would be able to be in rough weather and still have the goodness of full frame in a nice sized package. The 5d2 just doesn't quite get there for me (it doesn't have the level of weather sealing of the 1's I don't believe? and I would like something closer to 1 series gear in picture quality). Don't need or want a flash either so I can have a nice big view finder. If that is a '3d' then bring it I say!

To me it would have made more sense to have the 7D use a 1.3x sensor and then make the 1D IV FF.

I always thought that Canon will not make a D300 equivalent while the 1D-series is still 1.3x.
We shall see but the 1D4 has been already moved to FF, IMO.

How about a resounding defense of the untenable 5d2 perhaps. I can't wait....I'll laugh at everything you write... This is going to be a joke filled with drivel and nonsense. I can't wait... no further comment necessary....

Hah! You crack me up!

To quote you: "no further comment necessary."

But here's one anyway - this reminds me of the wacko young woman at the Frank town hall meeting and Frank's wise but direct statement to her: "I might as well have a discussion with my dining room table."

Have fun with this...

Why does everybody only talk about camera bodies? What about lenses? A camera is nothing without a proper lens.

If Canon could come up with some affordable long (>300mm) primes, that would be fantastic.
...a 400 of 500 f5.6 IS would be awesome. Or if possible if they can keep it under $4000: a 400 f4 IS (non-DO).

Because Canon's lens lineup is it's strong suite, the body department is where they slack(ed?).

That's exactly right, Steve. The 7D is a perfect example of how Canon is restructuring it's marketing theme although it's yet to be seen whether or not there are some artifacts of old still ingrained in it.

Only on FF... people using only 1.6x bodies are forced to make sacrifices at the wide end. Perhaps the 7D will make the deficiencies more obvious.

Here are my predictions:

PMA 2010: 1DMKIV - 15 mpixels, 1.3 crop, 10 fps, dual digic IV upgraded AF with some of the new tracking features seen in 7D, and new metering system, etc., $4,000
Photokina 2010: 1DsMKIV - 32 mpixels, FF, 5.5 fps, dual digic IV, same upgrades as 1DMKIV, $7,000
by the end of 2010 5D MKII drops to at least $2,200
PMA 2011: 3D - 21 mpixels, FF, 8 fps, dual digic IV all the other stuff from 7D, $3,000
Fall 2011: no high level camera, but 3D might slip to here
PMA 2012: 5DMKIII - 32 mpixels, FF, 4 fps, single
...Show more

I bet that wont be very far off when we get to 2012 and look back

Actually, it could be the 1DsM4 ... 18MPx2.56 = 46MP in Full Frame.

Biggest challenge is probably getting enough CPU speed with Digic V (or whatever) to process all that data ... although this isn't a sport-shooter anyway.

Are you referring to EF-S lenses? If so there is the outstanding 10-22 and 17-55 as well as a few third party UWA's that no Canon user should be against using (Tokina 11-16+12-24, Sigma 10-20 to name a few). If you are referring to fast WA primes, well I don't think you'll be seeing any of those in an EF-S mount any time soon, if ever. You can argue the 7D would open this door but that's yet to be seen. Otherwise this is a good tactic for Canon to get people to upgrade to APS-H or FF.

EOS 1dmk4, digic4x3,will need its own power supply an extra battery to run them,a new flash memory onboard varies for wanted buffer size,18mp,12 fps,2x SDHC slots,A/F fully customizeable with firmware 63pts available, metering F8 ev -1.5-22 4399.00
EOS 1dsmk4 Same a 1dmk4 but FF 32mp 6999.00

60D DigicV 5 (offers much better quality jpgs than current canons with CA control, more advanced sharpening, etc.), 6.3fps, 1080p, same old AF as 50D, $1099; basically a 50D with 1080p and digic V

3D single digic V, 21MP-24MP at 6-7fps or so, similar to 7D with all the new AF and so on but no smart VF so it can allow custom focus screens ( cogitech and myself love this ); $3100-$3400; arrives last (if ever )

if they stick APS-H: 1d4 dual-digiv V, 18MP at 12fps, etc. etc. $3800-$4000

1ds4 dual-digic V, 36-40+MP at 5-6fps, etc. etc. $5000-$5500

Since we're in guessing mode...

60D- 15mp APS-C, Digic V, 40/50D AF (1.2K)

3D-18-21mp APS-H/FF, Dual Digic V, 19pt AF, Flash commander, 5D sized body (add. 7D specs) (3-3.5K)
OR
5DIIn-21mp FF, 19pt AF, flash commander (add. 7D specs) (3-3.5K)

1DIV-16-18mp APS-H, Dual Digic V, Newly designed 45pt AF, flash commander, improved ISO100-12800 (25600 expandable) (add. 7D specs) (4.5-5K)

1DsIV-~30mp FF, Dual Digic V, + 1DIV specs. (8k)

Wondering whether or not we'll see gapless micro lenses in any one of the upcoming bodies, what ever that may be, implemented in any format...including FF.

Hmmm... Sounds to me like the 5D2 is overpriced, given your experiences. I'd think people tend to rent what it's not worth it to them to buy. I personally think Canon f'd up on the 5DII's pricepoint, given its (lack of) features. The release of the 7D just put it into proper perspective.

Also could be video guys renting the 5D MK II cameras.

In film / TV the overwhelming culture is to rent, not buy cameras and lenses.

I believe the 7D is the last "megapixel race" camera. The reason is the 7D was designed a while ago just before Canon started dropping MP on G11. So....modifying MVers' predictions :

- 60D- 12mp APS-C, Digic V, 19 AF (1.2K)
- 3D-15 mp FF, Dual Digic V, 45pt AF, Flash commander, 5D sized body (add. 7D specs) (3-3.5K)
- 5DIII-15mp FF, 45pt AF, flash commander (add. 7D specs) (3-3.5K)
- 1DIV-18mp APS-H, Dual Digic V, Newly designed 63pt AF, flash commander, improved ISO100-12800 (25600 expandable) (add. 7D specs) (4.5-5K)
- 1DsIV-~25mp FF, Dual Digic V, + 1DIV specs. (8k)

First of all, I don't consider 3rd party lenses to be a strength of Canon's lens lineup...especially since they're all available for competitors mounts as well.

Second, currently there is exactly one Canon lens that is good for WA (24mm equivalent FOV or wider) on a 1.6x body... the 10-22. Sure, I could drop 2K on a 14mm prime or use a fisheye, but lets be honest and accept that those aren't really options.

How in the world can anyone consider a lineup that consists of only one WA lens to be a strong lineup?

Sure, we'll get a second option in the form of a $800 version of the 24-135 focal length that everyone raves about on FF... yeah right, can't wait!

Two whole WA options from Canon's newly announced $1700 semi pro body! That is a joke!

Normally the next digic series appears first on P&S cameras. No sign yet of that, so maybe digic V won't be ready for PMA. However, it'd be annoying if they stuck with digic IV for 1D IV at PMA and then only 6 months later used digic V in 1Ds IV say. They've never offered different digic series in the 1D's though. Of course they could just run a improved digic IV+, but not an all new processor.

Too many possibilities as to what may happen over the next 6-12 months.

I wonder if Canon will keep the 15.1MP sensor alive and put 18MP in all their crops when updated? If the new improved gap-less microlens array is costly, and they need it to get the best noise out of the 18MP sensor, they may stick with the 15MP in lesser models, but will they further develop it or just off improvements in other areas?

nah because when the D700x has better DR and only 1/3 stop worse high ISO and gives 24MP at 7fps the 3D at 15MP and no reach will look silly

(even moreso the 1ds4 with the same specs as the D700x and 3.5x the price )

I think the next move will be a 6D which will be 12-16 MP with all the features of the 7D, followed by a 3D which will be a 21MP++ with features of the 7D.

Nikon will probably introduce the D700x with 24MP to compete.
