.......... I am licking my wounds knowing for sure that this is 1.6..... was really hoping for a full-frame. BUT, if the IQ is as good as the original 5D at ISO 800/1600, then I will be first in line......

I own 40Ds and a 5D2, and yeah, I'm angry that Canon didn't put this autofocus arrangement into the $2700 camera where it belongs. It'd take a minor miracle for the 7D to have better high-iso capability than the 5D2, which is what I need the 5D2 for. The difference is, the 7D will be able to focus in low light (with all the AF points, not just the center) while the 5D2 is a bad joke in that regard.
There was no excuse for this omission. If Canon can put 19-point cross-sensor AF in a $1700 body, they sure as heck could have put something a whole lot better than the lame 9-point, one cross-type AF in the $2700 body a very short time ago....Show more →
We don't yet know of the EV range under which AF can happen. The f stop requirements are based on geometry of the AF sensors, i.e. the angle at which the photons come in and not particularly the number of photons coming in.

Never occured to you that perhaps the AF module wasn't ready or tested last year when the 5D II was released? Ever occured to you that a 19-point AF in a 21mp camera might have severely lowered 1Ds III sales over the last year?
You can sit there and act like 12 months isn't a long time but in the world of business & making money it's an eternity, and the last time I checked virtually every retailer was selling through every single batch of 5D II's they received for over 8 months, and many still continue to sell out regularly to this day.
Stop the bitching already...it's a 100% fact that the 5D II was/is a huge success for Canon. Could they have made some improvements? Sure, but that doesn't mean they failed in making a $2700 camera.
In terms of delivering a camera that the market desired at the right time, they hit a home run.
I don't suppose anyone wants to donate to my "Impoverished students fund" do they?
Seriously though this camera looks like everything I would want in a camera apart from full frame, unfortunately I face a tough choice in upgrade terms since I want to upgrade my glass as well and I won't be able to afford both.
At Canon Europe prices I doubt I would be able to afford the camera but if that was the only upgrade I might have splashed out if it seemed worth it.

I read your comment on the 7D and weddings, and truth be told I couldn't agree more. I mean, yeah I'd like to shoot with 2 1dsmkiii's and call it a day, but realistically I could see me owning a 7D and a 5D2 in the next year. I'm not a big fan of being an early adopter, so prolly 5D2 first, then 7D, we'll see how many more action events I do...need trumps desire a lot of times.
I owned a 1DMKII once and was truly impressed with it's AF and image quality, however, it was too heavy for me........ then I was dazzled with the absolute perfection of a full-frame sensor with the L-primes, which gives it a whole different feel (especially the 35 f1.4)......
........so with this camera, I get the AF but not the full-frame sensor.......... Typical Canon marketing.........
In order to fully work with the AF assist function in the existing flashes I wonder if the current 9 pt system will be the static basis, with 10 more points added. . . .
It could of course be all new, but I think something like this is likely.
I know that may look a bit weird, but the "x"s are the original 9-pt pattern, and then the "o"s are perhaps the new points. The center six would be very similar to the 5D assist points, only moved out slightly. That would leave only 4 more new points and they make sense to me either as shown above, or moved out and towards the center to form a line with the top 2 and bottom 2 of the 6 points around the center point. This way all the flash assist pattern would mesh and we would get better coverage for tracking. However this wouldn't really enlarge the general AF region much.

Why not just wait for Canon rather than wasting your time guessing about something over which you have no control and in which your opinion is totally irrelevant (only what Canon actually does/did counts). This is probably one of the few times that looking at porn is probably a better use of your time.
I love the rumored specs. We'll see tomorrow for sure, but looks like I'll have my 1D Mk 2 for sale soon. I had zero interest in a FF camera, but I certainly understand those who do.
For my kind of shooting (youth sports), a crop camera is better and saves me work. A lot easier to sell a picture of lil Johnny or Suzy if you can see the face in an UNcropped image presented online for sale. Yes, I can crop them before sale, but when you are talking about thousands of pics on a weekend, not my idea of a good time. Still haven't been able to justify that 400 2.8 yet, a crop camera sorta gets me there for thousands less.
Expecting it will be good in low light in spite of the naysayers. Perhaps it's wishful thinking, but I can't see them putting out a sports/wildlife camera that can't shoot in low light (iso 3200-6400). Bad light is a constant companion for indoor sports. Wildlife favors dim light as well, and seems to me there is a great market for both kinds of shooters. On paper, this camera fits the bill nicely.
For some, it's not what they are looking for. For me and I suspect many others, it's EXACTLY what I need. No doubt there will be a new FF camera in a year or less, we'll all get our turn as long as we are waiting with the cash to buy the toys.

Just trying to pass the time really. Plus, I was surprised the layout discussion hadn't come up before. (or maybe I missed it)
