This is wrong on so many levels, it's ridiculous. Technology marches on, the base level for cameras steps up. Once another company shows that it's possible to produce a full frame camera, with serious autofocus, and a range of other useful features for photographers, for less than $2500 (that's the Nikon D700, by the way) then Canon has to compete in the same ballpark. Giving us one good AF point (in the center) and 8 very-iffy AF points in a poor spread is no longer good enough, not for the money they are charging. Nikon offers a serious low-light machine, which also happens to do the business for sports, portraits, landscape and event photography, for less than the price of a 5D2. Canon would sell a ton of that sort of camera.
Yeah, in the old days it was a rare skill to be able to follow focus with a long telephoto. Nowadays, it's expected. If the photog next to you has a camera that can do this, and you do not, then you are no longer competitive. Doesn't matter what was way back when. This is now.
My 40D has better autofocus on the outer points than my 5D2, which costs 2.5 times as much. That's just not right. Yeah, yeah, the 5D2 has 21 megapixels, which is a whole lot more than most of us really need. I would bet that many 5D2 owners would have preferred a 16 megapixel camera with great autofocus over what Canon came up with. Am I alone in saying that if all my Canon lenses mounted on a D700 that I'd own at least two of 'em?
It's the cost of switching systems when one owns a lot of lenses that allows Canon to get away with the stuff it does on the xxD, xD, and 1D series lines.
Page 50! I'm in. There has to be something special about Page 50. I hope.
I had a 20D. When the 30D came out, I (and apparently a lot of others) didn't think there was enough of a difference to upgrade. Then the 40D came out. I got one. So did a lot of other people. The 50D came out. Again, not enough of a difference to upgrade, so I didn't. Then the 5DII came out and I was really tempted to go FF but held off. File size was a BIG reason. I just wasn't into upgrading all of my computer equipment at that time. And that was the biggest hidden reason for not getting the 5DII.
But if this 7D turns out similar to the rumors, then I think I will probably make the jump. I need to upgrade computers anyway, I'll get a good tax break on Intangible Tax for office equipment (isn't it all office equipment?).
This could be a very nice Christmas. Hope it's available by then.
I'll be hangin' out here all week, not to see any announcement but to see sooooo many people eat crow!! Man, it'll be awesome! I might even eat some myself.
I may be missing something here, but app 18 megapixels on an APS-C sensor? My 50D was a bit noisy at high ISO....what's gonna happen here?
That was the #1 reason I went to the D3x and D700 and haven't looked back.
Maybe they had a breakthrough in signal processing to reduce noise??
The people trying to explain Canon's marketing principles and thought processes crack me up.
YOU GUYS DON'T KNOW ANYTHING. Unless someone FROM Canon comes in here explaining everything which won't ever happen in a million years, I'll just keep shaking my head at all of you building your "imaginary 1DIV" and telling us all why this does or doesn't make sense.

Step away from the computer!
What is your problem? A lot of people enjoy talking over rumors and discussing what they wish a camera might/could be. If someone doesn't enjoy reading rumors or talking about their "dream camera" they need not read the posts.
I don't know who you think you are to tell everyone that they "DON'T KNOW ANYTHING." I'm certainly no expert and there is a lot that I don't know. I do enjoy seeing what other people think and seeing how giddy people can be with the potential release of a new camera body/lens (and maybe I also find too much fun in seeing the mass disapointment when reality doesn't surpass or even come close to meeting the "dream" specs).
If you don't like general human nature and their irrational tendencies, my friend, feel free not to read what they write. No one is forcing you (at least that I know of.)
Step away from the computer? Perhaps you should take your own advice.
