Lezloid, if you take those two lenses as valid, why would the picture of a box posted show the 18-135 (which is not USM per lens data) mounted yet have clear labeling in the left corner stating a kit with USM and IS?
That, to me, would seem to designate that box photo as malarky. and if that one's crap, then I would certainly be more skeptical of the others.

So why 18 meg? Isn't that rather overegging the pudding for a sports shooter?
1) Canon seems to think that its customers want more megapixels;
2) forgetting sport shooters for a moment (they won't buy it unless RG says it's OK! ), wildlife/bird 'togs will be all over this camera if it works out, and as we're told all the time, more pixels = more cropping options = some redress for being FL challenged.

That box photo looks fairly believable and if it's true, there doesn't seem to be any built in flash.
By zooming in and squinting I see a button on the left side of the body that could be a flash pop-up button. I would be very surprised if it didn't have a flash

Not all USM lenses have USM labeled on the outer ring, maybe it depends on which version of USM?

Don't shout at me for not having read every post here, but the received wisdom seems to be the 7D is effectively an EF-S mount APS-C crop sports camera, right?
...a baby 1D, that will take the cheapo crap EF-S zooms?
So why 18 meg? Isn't that rather overegging the pudding for a sports shooter?
Or am I missing something here?

No reason to use cheapo crap EF-S zooms.
EF-S is just an option to get WA on crop. Has very little to do with sports.
Not only sports. Looks like a dream camera for wildlife.

Ah, perhaps it's just the angle, looks smooth to me. I see the button too now.
I'll repeat my question here. If the rumour is true, why would anyone buy the next xxD body when they can have this for a few hundred more.

I would love this camera if it does indeed promise what it's suggesting but I also want a glass upgrade and I can't really afford both, so I may end up getting a 40D instead.
Just because it's "only a few hundred more" doesn't mean that few hundred more is within everyones price point.

I certainly wouldn't buy an xxD,
... but many people prefer them over the rebels just because they can't stand the tiny grip on those. Since they otherwise would be fine with a rebel, those extra few hundreds would give them no affordable Canon alternative.

That's true I suppose but I was thinking more along the line of people who's actually after the performance. Pro AF, faster burst, higher ISO and better VF for a few hundred more? Sounds like the better value to me.

Not so sure about that. The long end of the focal length kinda confuses me. Why 135? And what's the point when Canon had just released the 18-200mm last year?

Haha, when I posted the pic clearly said "EF." Looks like it was just changed to EF-S. Just look at the previous versions of the post.
