Not necessarily. It could be a very smart marketing move. After all, they need to differentiate the 1-serious from the rest. I think that is why they left the 5D Mk II's AF at the 20D's level.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

So how is it a rebel? The body is magnesium alloy, and a little more full feeling than the XXd bodies. Rebels are plastic. It has better AF than a rebel. Long mirror blackout I believe is as a result of design of the FF camera. I have no experience with the 1ds1 and 1ds2, but I'm thinking that they are a bit slower than a newer camera now also.

So I'll put the ball in your court, because I don't really have to claim anything about the 5D. There's a reason, even now, that IQ alone puts it up there

1D2 has much lower blackout from mirror than even a 50D. So short you often are worried that you didn't even take a picture. And the 50D itself has a noticeably shorter mirror blackout than the 5D2.

Having shot both the 5D2 (which has better performance specs than the 5D) and 50D and 1d2 and rebel for sports I say the 5D2 performance feels a lot more like a rebel in actual sports usage than a 50D and the rebel to 5 jump feels a LOT smaller than the 50D to 1 series jump in terms of speed of feel (ignoring AF for the moment and any other aspect).

granted the 5 series af does better for that than the rebel and maybe even better than the 50D but it is crazy to say the fps/mirror/etc feel like they are quick and responsive.

I dont get why 5D1 owners are so ridiculously defensive about their cameras, simply put it is NOT a high performance body, but somewhat towards the lower tier when it comes to mirror box/shutter/fps.

but it would kinda kill the whole reason they make a big deal about this

i mean what is it APS-C again, wow, no big deal

the only thing that would make it a big deal is if it had really top AF

Strange. I always thought GM got so big because it produced exactly what the US customers wanted.

Happy shooting,

yeah it has better high iso but that is from teh FF sensor which I said ti obviously has, it is more like rebel body performance (slow fps, long mirror blackout, long for a higher-end dslr trigger reaction time) than xxD

or did you 5D deliver 6.3fps or more, have barely noticeably mirror blackout and instant reaction? come one shoot a few minutes of sports with a 5D2 (FASTER than the 5D) and then with a 50D and the 50D feels like it will jump out of your hands (not saying i think the 50D is better, but it is way

I have owned a D30, an XT, a 20D, two 40Ds and 2 two 5Ds. Yes the 40D had much less mirror blackout than the 5D but other than that, you can keep it. If I was shooting BIF or soccer, I would get a used 1DmkII. For weddings, portraits, landscapes (e.g. non sports photography) there is no contest.

Now I also assume if canon wanted the 5D mkII to 'feel' like the 50D, they could have done that. If you cuold take the 5D and add an updated focus system, 1 stop better higih ISO, I would pay $2000 for it.

it woudln't make too much sense if this is just a 50d replacement as they should have called it 60d or 70d or whatever. very curious now if it has a 1.3 or larger sensor.

Look at the camera on the poster. It has the new EF-S 16-85 on it. So, it is a APS-C, you all cropper are very happy now!

This is not in any way a 50D replacement. Completely different product type.

Why not? It's a 50D with more MP (just like every other upgrade in the XXD series), video, an uprated AF-system and some more fps. We've seen a lot more of these kind of upgrades in the last years.
If it is a replacement of anything, the 50D must be it.

The 50D will probably be the closest thing to it, but the 7D (if specs are accurate) will be a completely different animal aside from the sensor size.

because if it replaced the 50d, it would have been labeled 60d or other 2 digit name

think of it this way you have the 5dmk2,Canons new strategy make a camera one down the 7d which I feel is a 1.3 native crop with a 1.6 also...then make a camera one above the 5dmk2...drum roll 3d FF with one series specs...easy

How this alleged 1.6x crop camera is going to have clean output at high iso with an 18mp sensor is beyond me. But everything else about it looks great.

I'm not a sport shooter, but I do a lot of low light performance photography. I almost never use the center point if I can get away with it. The 9-point layout of the xxD and 5D series is a compositional hindrance. We need more cross-type sensors close to the rule of third locations. If this camera does that, it'll be a huge step forward. It's so much easier to compose decently on a 1D3 than on a 40D. The 5D2, because of the nine point pattern concentrated toward the center, is a bad joke.

So 19 AF points, heck yeah! This is what should have been in the 5D2, at $2700.
