That's my concern... Canon protecting each of their camera tiers ( Rebel, Prosumer, Pro) by crippling their cameras to a point where Nikon is way ahead at each price point. Seems like Nikon let it all hang out and as chez says... did not take any shortcuts.

With the information available (which is hardly concrete), there is nothing that "appears" to have been compromised. The fact that it looks like an effort was made to put pro AF in the thing is encouraging - very encouraging.
CR has a new update for their site...Nice specs, nice camera...Nice lens choices also, the 15-85 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and the to come closer to the 24-105, and the 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS(Doesn't appear to be USM). See how the reviews post....

They didn't "let it all hang out" until august of 2007. In fact, for the 5 or 6 years before that Nikon's offerings were obviously second rate. The official Nikon line at the time was that full frame was overrated, and CCD sensors were as good as CMOS. I don't blame Canon for going with incremental improvements - there was absolutely no reason for them to go nuts. When Nikon finally challenged them, it took time (and likely lost marketshare) for Canon to respond.

This camera looks really good on spec indeed. However, I too made a decision to go FF in the near future and got rid of all my EF-S or other EF crop lenses recently, so I am not interested in buying another crop camera especially a high-end(higher price) one.

Agreed. If only they had done a little more with the 5DII's AF and fps.

That's a contradiction: if there is a large gap between rebel and 7d, then they can fill that gap with the xxd line. Only if there is not a big gap will there be no need for an xxD.
Relax. None of us believed that they would make a non-1 series with pro AF, and it appears they have.
They can fill that gap, but the xxd line will languish further in that space. That line ha no room for meaningful upgrades without running smack into 7d territory. Expect all future updates to be 20d-30d caliber or worse.

actually yes I would. The 5d was/is still a better camera to hold in your hands, it had much better high iso capabilities, better controls than the rebel, and the rebels felt like something from toys r us.
yeah it has better high iso but that is from teh FF sensor which I said ti obviously has, it is more like rebel body performance (slow fps, long mirror blackout, long for a higher-end dslr trigger reaction time) than xxD
or did you 5D deliver 6.3fps or more, have barely noticeably mirror blackout and instant reaction? come one shoot a few minutes of sports with a 5D2 (FASTER than the 5D) and then with a 50D and the 50D feels like it will jump out of your hands (not saying i think the 50D is better, but it is way faster in those respects).
18MP
Dual Digic 4
8 FPS?
All Cross-type 19 point AF
ISO 6400
63 metering zones
100%coverage of Optical Viewfinder
Artificial Intelligence something
3" LCD something
EOS something FullHD (I guess the blurred word is movie)
LIVE VIEW
how is 8fps double-speed from 6.3fps
i wonder what they mean by that??
most importantly though:
OK, so they say 19pt all cross-type. Other rumors say a baby version of the new 1D4 AF.
Critical points as to whether this camera is finally what the 50D should have been or will still fail to fully deliver for action:
1. Will it process at the same speed using the same logic as the 1D4?
2. Will it have 6 assist points for the main point or, as some rumors suggest, NO assist points and a, somewhat useless for sports and action, addition of 10 extra regular points scattered all over?
3. It is the MkIII sensor and logic only with all helpers removed
my guess is:
1. yes
2. no
3. let's hope not!
no for #2 would be a real shame especially if the main point is even more quick to jump off target than the 50D.
If it is yes, yes,no then the AF should totally rock though....

and to think people thought canon "learned" because the G11 had less MP
the only really good thing about this 18mp small sensor body is the hope it brings that perhaps in a few years canon will put a larger sensor in a similar body with pro-like AF at a 5d-like price.
Between this and the 5DmkII canon could not have come any closer but ULTIMATELY BUNGLE & limit the final product from greater capability (5D2 af system limit, 7D MP overload on small sensor)
I wish they had given the dual-digic and improved mirror box and AFmodule to the 5 series and given us out 3D....
seriously imagine 5D2 were to arrive now with 18MP, 8fps, new AF.... at $3100-$3400.
It would be all praise I bet.
I mean the 7D may be cool but canon seems now to do nothing but react and then when nikon puts out a D700x it will take canon, once the sole FF player, like another year two to get a 3D out....
It just pisses me off what Canon does with the 5D II's AF and then they make this 1.6X camera. Will Canon never make a 5D sized FF camera with semi-pro AF, like the D700? Because I really want just one camera and that would do it for me.
the ironic thing is if they simply chopped off the assist points which is what a pure action cam like the 7D NEEDS and put that in the 7D instead of the 5D2 and then put in the 5D2 a sensor with assist points!
we'll see, hopefully not, but i really fear the 7D will have no assist points and just more outer cross points which would be more suited for a wedding/portrait cam....
