Didn't they call that APS-H

Yes, but perhaps Zara meant DX-format (1.5x). That's not a big enough change to make a real difference, IMHO, though it might make 3rd party lens designers lives a bit easier. I have always thought the 1.6x sensor size was a little goofy, and that 1.5x should have been a common standard.

What baffles me is that people think that Canon is going to release a BETTER camera for LESS money than the 5D2.

Define "BETTER." A 12.8MP, 8fps APS-H body with an AF system between a 50D and 1D3 isn't necessarily better than a 5D2. Like the 1D and 1Ds lines, they would serve different purposes. If those specs are on par with what this supposed 7D will have, it makes for an ideal prosumer camera for sports, wildlife and light freelance PJ work, but it'd be light on the pixels for landscape work plus have the penalty of not taking EF-S lens and thus not capable of ultra wide work (unless you spring for a Sigma 12-24mm or one of the 14mm primes on the market). Nor will it be serious competition with the expected specs from a FF 1D4. I don't think it will have a $1800 price tag unless Canon is really feeling the heat from the Nikon D300s and feels they need to price it there. I'd expect it to run $2100 to $2500 based on the competition.

they absolutely won't release a BETTER camera for less than the 5DmkII. Especially with pro features and several hundred cheaper.

but didn't bestbuy have a $2800 price tag on the 7D? that is more realistic for the latest rumored specs, dual card, dual digic, aps-h? "lord of darkness".

$1500-1800 is not even realistic only for the 60D (whenever that ships, lets hope canon retires that line for a while & regroups).

Believe in what? There is a zillion of specs and prices here. In which to believe? So yes, the guessing game is fun but no, until the camera/lens are announced, with full and confirmed spec and price I don't believe.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Believe is all about faith, like religion. Either you believe or you don't. Unlike religion in which one's belief is only confine to believing or not believing and nothing more as God's existence cannot be scientifically proven, here we have situation whereby a belief will soon be proven or not proven. In that sense, it's a kind of speculation more than a belief. There is no need for faith here for sooner or later, the truth will be out. So the question remains at the moment until the announcement : Is there a 7D? And if so, what's it? If there is no 7D, then what will it be?

By definition a 7 series is lower down the food chain than a 5 series. They cannot sell it for more. They would have to call it a 3D.

Why do they avoid the even single digits: no 8D/6D/4D/2D. I know 4 is some how bad luck but 8/6/2 ?

Well then, that's called a 1ds mark III. Honestly, Canon is not going to release a 1ds3 just without the integrated grip and sell it for the 5d2 price. It doesn't make any business sense. The 3D that people have been wanting is basically Canon's version of the Nikon D700. Practical MP with great High ISO and Pro AF. You can't have high rez and pro AF and also weathersealing at a low price- that's what Canon charges a premium for.

but apparently north america can get a 1D3 at 5D2 prices now... this is encouraging for the future of dslrs. (and somehow depressing for us in europe.)

Maybe they'll raise the 5DmkII price soon ? haha.

But really all "definitions" based on film no longer apply. Digital has too many options & niche customers to pigeon hole model lines like that IMHO.

I also think price is not an ultimate "model number" factor since it can change. Don't you think Canon Japan would consider a 21MP full frame with 1AF point "better" than a 14MP APS-H with 19 cross sensors? Maybe the 3D will be the next 5D. Who knows.

I guess i'm just saying bestbuy inventory has a history of being correct and the price was clearly visible. the specs point to a pricier model not the next 60D.

The inventory system at bestbuy might be right, but I don't trust their prices.

I don't think it matters whether it's digital or film, if they call something a 7D then in their mind it is not as good as a 5D II. However, what that means with digital is harder to answer than with film, where there were clear demarcations between models. Pixel count is not necessarily a measure of whether a model is better, as we've seen the 1D I/II/III out-gunned by even entry level cameras on pixel count. Still I'd be curious to see how this pans out.

I found this interesting

One of the most common complaints we've seen about the 5D Mark II is that it still has the same AF system as the original 5D. Why is this?

"Firstly the market's evaluation of the 5D's AF system has been very positive; there have been no complaints from users, with everyone saying it's very good. Given that, to a certain extent, we think we shouldn't change it. And also there's some limitation with size; the AF sensor in the 50D is very big; the one in the 5D is much smaller. If we wanted to have all cross-sensors in the 5D Mark

AKA--It would cost too much for us to implement an updated AF system in the 5DII, so we took the same system from the 5D, recycled it, and used it to save us a bunch of money. We tell everyone that they like it, and a lot of people actually believe us. For those who didn't like it, we made sure not to interview them

well, I guess Chuck had to say something to defend their AF decision. It still sounds a lot like marketing BS to me. I can't imagine that it was no problem whatsoever to include a sensor shaker (which increases sensor dimensions by quite a bit) but the AF sensor all of a sudden is the deal breaker. I'm convinced that the decision to stay with an outdated AF system was a very conscious one, and not for the reasons given above.

One of the coolest features about the 5DII is that it is a real camera. Right now, people are out in the world taking real pictures with it.
