Thanks, I have a lot of learning to do. Just sold all of my Canon gear to get a GH1, need to figure out lens stuff for micro four thirds. I knew about the 4/3 adapter but not the Adaptall-2 adapters. Does autofocus work with these?

No, Adaptall lenses are all manual focus. In addition you lose AF with adapters unless they're electronic like the MA1.

The GH1 offers AF with all m43 lenses, all Panasonic 4/3rds lenses except the 14-50 f2.8-3.5 OIS, most current Standard Grade Oly lenses and the 14-54 f2.8-3.5 II. All other HG lenses, all SHG and all SIgma 4/3rds lenses do not AF. All other adapted lenses do not AF.

Blasphemous action (at this forum)...

Just focus, where this rocks...

Looks alot better than my Tokina 17/3.5 RMC in the corners, but the Tokina is just as sharp in the middle. I think I'll have to disassemble it (again), because it is slightly decentered. That could also be the cause of the inferior corner sharpness.

my Tokina is pretty sharp, and decent contrast:

you meant the 24mm? Still, not a bad price for a new one.
My previous copy of the 17mm was soft and I passed by many chances picking up another one. However, Paul's sample looks quite good. I might have to give it another try.

I didn't realize you could get such apparent distance with a ultrawide. You must have at least been standing on top of your car to get that shot.

Sorry for the missing photos. I cancelled my flickr account.

Test shot, through glass, from work today

This shows two things;

1) This lens is not an architecture lens (I already knew this) and this shot confirms the non-linear, waveform distortion reported by Modern Photo.

2) The corner performance is right in line with Modern Photo's test results. CA only creeping in at the extreme edge.

What i like best about the 17 3.5 is the apparent polarizing effect. Deep blue sky!

Me too I forgot to add this to the list of why I love the lens.

I don't know how it is possible for a lens to do this. Remarkable, really.

More blue sky for you, Ulrik.

Wide open on my 5D.

(I don't own a polarizer, BTW)

Mine doesn't seem to be as sharp as yours Paul. I am now on the hunt for a copy that doesn't have the built in filter.

Ok guys...all the shots on this thread convinced me to try this lens again. The lens arrived a couple of weeks ago and I wasn't blown away by the original shots. However, I was busy and set the lens aside to look at later. Well I checked it out today and figured out the problem. My lens doesn't focus to infinity...wide open 10 feet across the room is an issue. The Adaptall2 or the OM/EOS adapter don't seem to be the issue...they seem properly installed and are tight.

Does anyone know how one would go about adjusting this lens for infinity?

Hey Cal,

No, I have no idea. I've never taken one apart. Hopefully someone here will have an idea how to approach it. Maybe try at forum.manualfocus.org, as well?

I'll do that. It's really messed up. It appears that at minimum focus distance on the scale it's beyond infinity. I hadn't really looked at the focus scale before now and I realize that I was turning to minimum distance in an attempt to get distant object in focus.

In order for the lens to be "beyond infinity" with the focus ring at minimum focus distance the lens must be mis-assembled. Try the lens on a short extension tube to see if it comes closer to the proper range of focus. The objective here is to move all the element groups away from the sensor.

I don't have a tube handy, but at MFD the lens comes into focus as I move it away from the sensor. I'm coming to the same conclusion...that the lens has been mis-assembled. I think I'll let a repair shop have a look.
