Will do cogitech, but I think I've figured it out. By swapping around different bodies and different adapters it appears that I'm using a combination of adapters that are too thin. I was testing on the E-P1 using a Adaptall@>OM > OM>EOS > EOS>MFT. When I moved to a Canon body I can get get infinity, but it occurs at ~6' on the focus scale. Another OM>EOS adapter I have works a bit better, so I suspect the first OM>EOS is a bit too thin, but not enough on it's own to cause the problem. However, if the EOS>MFT is too thin as well the effect would be compounded. Testing the EOS>MFT with other lenses, I don't have an issue acheiving infinity, but the focus scale seems to always be short of the actual distance, leading me to believe that it's a bit too thin as well. With the short focal length of the 17, the focusing elements don't have to move much to throw off the focus, so a combination of the two thin adapters result in the lens focusing at beyond infinity at the minimum focus distance on the lens scale.
I can certainly see how this would play out, considering the quite short focus throw of this lens, and it's focal length. The distance between "2m" and "infinity" on this lens is extremely small. The unit only moves back 1mm or so when going from "2m" to "infinity". Stack a few imperfect adapters and, well, I guess you found out what happens.
Glad you figured it out. How do you plan to correct the issue?
I'll shim up the OM adapter with metal tape to start. I've contacted the vendor of the MFT adapter so we'll see where that goes. The MFT adapter looks like it would be easy to adjust as well. The EOS mount seems to simply be attached to the adapter with screws. I'd just remove it, shim it out a bit and reassemble.
I currently use cheap Cokin-P size filters (5$ copy).
Size does not matter so much for me since most time I hold the filter in front of the lens with my free hand. But I'm longing for better ones, due to occasional color cast. Sadly, the Singh-Rays are very expensive!
Since you are asking - is the filter size important to you? Certainly one must be able to position the filter's transition zone over the entire frame, but is there something else?
That first one you found is mine. Google must have pulled it from my Flickr site. How were you able to download it? In this case, I don't mind, but I thought that I had my settings set so that wasn't possible. How did you do that? I really like this lens. It performs very well.
I didn't actually download it. I just hot-linked it; simply pasted the url in my post.
Sorry about that.

No need to apologize. Just curious as to how you did it. Yeah, it's a very good lens. I have the original version with built in filters and the original Tamron lens shade. I snagged mine for about $100.00 I see them go for much more now. And I've seen the original lens shade go for almost as much, if you can find it. A couple of my buddies have procured this same lens, and love it. It's better than the legendary Rokkor version.

Which version of these two lenses is the better performer?

I only have and use the first version. But from what others have said, is that they both perform pretty much the same. It's a very good lens. I highly recommend it.
I might be picking one up to more or less round out my light weight prime kit. I'm curious to see what kind of quality I can get from it with my 5DmkII.
It would be "double adapted" so to speak, adaptall to contax, then contax to EOS. would there be any problems with that?

Adaptall2 to EOS adapters seem to be pretty rare. I use a OM version and there doesn't seem to be any issues.

They're the rarest of the original adapters, but there seems to be a findable supply of Chinese knockoffs (and for Alpha mount too).
I bought a Chinese Tamron Adaptall-2 to EF mount adapter from eBay for about $20 shipped, works great, much cleaner installation IMO. Seems to be a pretty accurate replica...
