p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Seeking lens hood for the Mamiya M645 35/3.5 N

Just got the lens and it seems fabulous but one thing bothers me, it came without a lens hood. So, I am thinking about buying one.

First step: Google. Surprisingly, it was not of much help. Not only that all I could find is an AF lens which sells with the lens hood (totally irrelevant) but the links did not tell me if the lens hood of the AF version is the same as the lens hood of the MF version.

Second step: E-bay. Nothing relevant.

Third step: Dedicated camera shops (B&H, KEH, Adorama). I had minor success. I found something but (a) It's a replacement hood (I prefer an original one) and (b) It's designed for the AF version and I referred to that problem above.

Forth step (which should probably be the first....): Contact my knowledgeable friends which reside on this board via this thread. I attach pics of my lens, just to avoid any misunderstandings.

Two additional preference:
1. If possible, I'd like to pay with PayPal.
2. I'd only buy from reliable people/stors.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Yakim,

Is that the Mirex adapter?

If so, how did you manage to get one? (I need.... I need .....)

--------------------------

As for hoods, have you considered making your own out of a step ring + cardboard?? I posted details about this a long time ago, could dig them up if you need. Basically, a rectangular (or even better, petal) hood will always be better than a round one. There is a formula for how to figure the H X W X depth.

Also, the absolute optimum hood size varies depending upon aperture. Since the Mamiya "C" lenses are fairly flare-prone, you might also consider (not that I have yet done this myself) making a sliding front piece, that would adjust for this.

There is also a website that offers free templates for making petal hoods, though I doubt they list this lens, or any MF-on 35mm for that matter.
-----------

-just a thought.

Yakim,

I am following in your footsteps as well, regarding the 35 C (n). I am trying to source one for a good price now but it requires patience. In any event, none of the used ones I see come with a lens hood.

If I discover a solution, or a product number, I'll post it here. If you do find something out as well, we'd love to know about it.

If you already have a Cokin 'P' series filter holder then an additional hood would be quite cheap and would probably work quite well.

Mamiya shares it's hoods with other bodies so the hood required for the M645 35 might be the same one used on a different RZ or RB body. That might help to find the right hood.

I want the original, hard plastic one, as I want both flare protection and shock protection, should it ever fall. A few years back I dropped an Elan 7e and 85/1.8 from 2m to hard concrete. The original lens hood was made out of hard plastic so it smashed to pieces, thus absorbing the impact's energy. The camera and lens survived this ordeal with very minor scratches and were fully functional immediately afterwards.

About getting the Mirex adapter, well, I needed several months of patience. Start reading here and work your way to the end. Watch the dates.

A word about PayPal. While I prefer buying with it, if the Adorama hood is the only one currently available on the net and if it perfectly fits I'll wave this request and get it.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Are you sure the original hood was hard plastic?

I don't believe that there ever was an 'original' Mamiya hood for the 35mm lens, 'C' or 'N'. I've looked through 2 of my original Mamiya brochures for the M645 1000s and M645 Super (35mm 'C' and 35mm 'N' lenses respectively) and both list the hoods as being "Not Required" and do not list any such hood. In other words, Mamiya never seemed to have a hood for that lens. They had a hood for the 45mm which was described as "Slip-On", which incidently is shared with the RB/Z 50 and 65 as well, I have one.

Hummmm……… maybe it's just my long stay in the Canon land that got me used to such hoods. I only hope that there is such a hood and that it is made out of hard plastic.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Many of 645 glass used rubber-screw-on hoods vs plastic or pull -out metal. If you can find any screw-in rubber hood 77mm with a suitable FoV (90 deg on 645), you should be flare-protected.

The rubber unit for my 80/1.9 is pretty simple - screw on, flip back over lens when not in use, use a 67mm pinch cap.

Ok - more importantly, how does the lens perform..?

B&H has hood for the AF version of this lens. Same filter size was used. I would bet that it fits and is not dissimilar to the original one. For $39, you can find out...and if you don't like it, just send it back.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/213301-REG/Mamiya_210_600_35mm_f_3_5_Lens_for.html#accessories

Alternatively, I could buy it for you and trade it for the Mirex...seems fair.

That hood has a bayonete fitting. There is no bayonete on the 35 C or N lenses.

Just looked closely into the front of my lens. It seems that the only possible hood for it is a screw-on type, where a filter should attach.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Or a push-on hood, which Mamiya has used before on the 645 line (The hood for the 77mm filter version of the 45/2.8 is push-on).

Any screw-on hoods are male threaded for mounting on lens and have receiving thread 'other' side for filters, etc. they're cheap, thick, flexible and for someone use to plastic hoods, pretty good, compact alternative to a bolt-on as it were.

Re Mirex, email them directly from their website. They're pretty good at responding and they will let you know when the next batch will be available.

Luckily, the push-on hoods are slightly wider. I am using an AF 85/2.8 hood on my "C" version. I just knocked the glass out of a cheap 58mm UV filter, and glued the AF hood onto it. Simple, and now I have the (theoretically) correct hood-shape for this lens.

I have started praying. Psalms 121:1 seems like a good place to start.

Just been informed that "Mamiya never produced a lens hood for the manual focus 35mm. lens as they said it was "not required"."

Happy shooting,

What about one of their, or Hassy's adjustable bellows hoods...
