To be fair, Paul should rent a bron and shoot comparisons so they are exactly the same pp.

I think the bottom one is much creamier.

Definitely creamier, but there's a lot more fill going on in that shot than in Spencer's with black seamless. Spencer's would need to be a little further back and with a fill card on the side to make it a fair test. Plus Spencer has the white, not the silver, so it's not gonna look that different from a large SB.

Paul,

Any comment on how one or more speedlites are going to fill a parabolic reflector?

Thanks in advance.

You're right - you're blind! It's that little clip by the ratchet handle.

I would start with a piece of nylon diffusion material over the speedlight, poofed out to form a dome of sorts. Set the speedlight to wide angle. Or maybe a translucent Tupperware type bowl. Or best of all, spring for a couple hundred bucks and gat an AB400 or better, AB800.

Spedlights are typically 50-60WS so you should get about f5.6 to f8 at 10' from solver PLM if you can diffuse it decently. Nylon diffusion doesn't really eat light - it just spreads out what's there. But you have to mount it near the PLM edge.

Creamier? I would say more like the bottom one sucks compared to the top. But that's just my opinion. Maybe I just don't understand creamy pictures? Oh - now I get it - overexposed highlights are creamy - is this it?

Got an idea - you rent the Bron - I don't have time. Plus my goal is to design and sell effective products, not to make comparisons that the anti-Bees will just say I fudged on and that I am trying to make claims of superiority, or that I am an egomaniac or idiot or all the oft repeated slams found regularly here by some.

Does this mean you'll be coming out with a new line of Fong knockoffs too?

Maybe you could call them "Poofers".

Life is short. Laugh and live a little.

Lol, I wasn't trying to replicate or match the lighting of the shot posted. To be fair though, I believe my light was much much closer to me than what the ad shot had, that light was probably alteast 10ft away.

Carmen, thanks for the pic. I never would have thought that was a larger umbrella shaft. Wow, never saw it, thanks for pointing it out!

I'm just glad to have a light source that is really comparable to El Octa. For about 8% of the price, I think it does a fine job.

3/4 the price of a AB400!

Paul won't say it, but somebody should. Speedlight and parabolics are a miserable match.

There I said it. Let the flames commence.

Good luck.

You won't get any flames from me... you are exactly correct.

Why do people try and use a wrench to drive a nail instead of a hammer?

Is it just a way to try and cheap out of having the correct tools?

Just like I'm sure you would agree that some people just can't here the subtleties of audio like an audiophile, or a sommelier can taste the subtleties in wine that most people can't, or that some people can see the subtleties of light (photophile?) that most can't.

Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it's not there.

Oh, why the hell would I rent a Bron to compare it to your product? I'm not the one begging for samples. I haven't once once slammed your product in this thread, just not totally sold it will produce the same quality of light.

I know for a fact it won't be to the same level of build quality that the premium brands are (none of your products have been so far), but they are built well for the price. Not everyone needs a 1D series canon build for the price either, I'd say AB's are more like the canon rebels of lighting. So just like canon sells a lot more rebels than 1D's, so do you.

It certainly was an apology and was sincere. In context of this particular thread I have no problem with the out of line statement. Not entirely sure about comments in other threads and forums over the past couple of year, and don't have the time or inclination to spend a bunch of time researching them. Let me restate it: Simon, I apologize if my comments were unfair to you.

On the other side of the coin, I have been unfairly attacked and maligned many many times on these forums and have never seen anything remotely resembling an apology that I am aware of.

Is that enough or should we have ten more pages on this.

Believe me, I know all about audio "golden ears" esoterics. Like in the photo industry, they represent 1/10% of that industry and spend vast time and energy on subtleties the real world can't hear and pay no attention to. I have a number of gold records and an honorary lifetime fellowship in the AES as credentials on this subject. My motto has always been :"I serve the 80%"

As for renting a Bron, that was your idea. I really don't care how a PLM compares to a Bron - only whether it serves my customers well.

No offense intended.
