Definitely creamier, but there's a lot more fill going on in that shot than in Spencer's with black seamless. Spencer's would need to be a little further back and with a fill card on the side to make it a fair test. Plus Spencer has the white, not the silver, so it's not gonna look that different from a large SB.

Cream is milky white and has no punch - so I guess that's the deal here?

It certainly was an apology and was sincere.

Cool. that is really nice of you Paul! I mean that!

On the other side of the coin, I have been unfairly attacked and maligned many many times on these forums and have never seen anything remotely resembling an apology that I am aware of.

Yeah, no question on that front!

I have always tried to be professional, but I apologize for my role in any of the bashing (at least when you didn't deserve it. )

This place has been a mess lately. Everything getting pulled down to the lowest common denominator. A lot of the old line pros - and newer posters with a lot of exzperience - have left FM as it has gotten worse and worse. It is a real loss to the forum when you only have relative "newbies" around.

Some folks stick around and try to fight to make it better. Personally, I vacilate between staying and going. Some good people here that keep pulling me back.

For the record, I PM'ed Cordell a month ago and apologized to him for being a bit rude in another thread.

Cheers!
Michael

Michael, Thanx. But I think the big picture here is that, in spite of a lot of sniping, this thread has provided a whole lot of information that should be valuable to all regardless of where their loyalties and opinions might fall. Sometimes it takes controversy to bring out useful info.

Reflectors are made. The removable/adjustable direct light shield is scheduled for shipping from China in 9 days (air freight). So we're probably looking at about 14 days for our customer shipping.

I'm doing a bunch of studio shots next week.

Cool. Can't wait.

Paul - the adjustable light shield, are these akin to the Elinchrom Deflectors?

Pretty much the same. Ours are just a flat matte aluminum disc with shaft. The shaft goes in the umbrella attachment hole in any Buff light.

Regarding: "This set of two deflectors is designed to work with the Elinchrom Minisoft reflector. It consists of a gold deflector for "warming" the color, and a silver deflector, for "hardening" the light quality from the reflector." . . . . total misinformation. The silver "deflector" doesn't "harden" the light - it softens it by blocking the high specularity direct light from the flashtube.

Excellent video on using a large parabolic. Notice on some shots the light is dead on to the model and the shooter is sitting in front of the light. This give the essential result of a very large ring flash.

As someone who had to superglue his Elinchrom deflectors today (Loctite rules), make sure that the shafts are well-attached (if not integral) to the screw post itself. The Elinchrom ones came loose within a shoot or two.

With all respect, the guy in the linked vid appears to have very little idea at all, how to use the Big Octa he is singing the prases of.

The shaft is hollow and threaded on both end. The disc attaches with a screw and lock washer. Expect no problems with this.

A large Octa is a parabolic, regardless of the name. I would argue against it having only 8 segments though. This makes it much more of an approximated parabolic than 16 segments and yields catchlights that scream "umbrella".

Oh? I thought he had a good handle on how to use it - certainly in context with what he was shooting. How would you light a model with an Octa or Para or whatever you choose for basically the same item? What do you feel he did wrong?

Ellis, I consider you a very knowledgeable expert, but totally disagree with you on this one on both counts.

I'm the guy who made the video you are referring to
and I'm a bit confused by your comment.

For one thing, I'm not aware of there being a "right" way to
use any piece of equipment. If I am shooting for a client
and the client likes the image, is there any more to it
than that? If I can state as a fact that I have sold images
to clients using certain lighting methods, can it really be
said that the equipment is being used the wrong way?
Every photographer I know puts his Ring Flash on his
camera. If one day some guy decides to take it off
camera and put it a 90 degree angle to the client, and
the client likes the image, would you say he "doesn't
know how to use" a Ring Flash?

Second, it's really easy to sit back and watch You Tube and
say, "Well, that guy doesn't know what he is talking about."
But the real challenge is to put yourself out there and make
a tutorial video. If you have never made one, I would suggest
you try. You start second guessing yourself about things
you really thought you knew. You worry about making a
complete ass of yourself on a World Wide web. It's easy to
post stuff on the internet using a fake name. It takes a lot
more courage to use your real name and really put yourself out there.

Believe it or not making the videos and subjecting yourself
to the critiques, is a very healthy experience.

I don't claim to be an expert, and if you check my You Tube
videos you'll see that I leave up a LOT of negative comments
about my videos. I don't claim to be an expert on lighting or
photography. I enjoy the challenge of making videos and I am
only showing techniques that have worked for me. The videos
aren't intended to come across as some sort of expert
explaining the "right" way to do something.

And, if you can enlighten me on a better way to use the
Octabank than what I showed, I'd be eager to learn.
And that sentence is not intended to be sarcastic, btw.

These are the images from the video in question.
No image adjustments have been made.
