Cool!!! What is that harsh white light in front of the light? IS that the other side of the reflector?

It is the translucent deflector.

FYI The quadra battery is user replaceable SLA 3.6Ah and the Ranger RX speed or RX speed AS is 12Ah.
I am so tempted to modify the battery box with wires which can be connected to external spare batteries.

I'm looking for a lighting kit I can take on location. I'm moving up from hotshoe flashes used off camera. Will these overpower the sun in the background?

I doubt it. You might want the Ranger RX for that.

Can this be classed as over powering the sun @ f20?

I don't think so. While ambient looks dark, the subject does too. It looks like very nice fill flash...

No.
Highlights typically tell the story, but in this case shadows are a dead give away where the shadows from the sun are clearly darker than from the strobe.
I'm guessing another half stop for a 1:1, full stop for overpower and 2+ for "day to night".

Good luck.

The camera smallest aperture will go to f22, but this photo setting is already at f20 sync speed 1/200, another 1/3 stop will not make a big different.

Is it physically possible to over power the sun at all?? or does it mean that if someone require to over power the sun they need 30x SB900 at f22 1/8000 to over power the sun?

What's your ISO? 200?

Still, lower ISO might help with the f stop, but it won't help you with the flash power.

It's tough with a speedlight, especially at the distance shown. And HSS is a fagettaboutit at that distance too. Brute power with high efficiency reflector is probably needed to "overpower" the sun in this scenario.

Good luck.

With the right reflector, it doesn't take a whole lot of power.

Get a D40. I use my 580 EX II with it (Yes I know that's a Canon flash). Wired, it can easily sync at 1/4000th. Wireless, 1/1000th. You only need about f/5.6-16 at 1/4000th ISO 200 to give you different sunlight looks.

Get a 3-1 pc sync adapter, and you can slap together a few flashes.

For Canon, the 1D can do the same, though I had less luck with it's electronic shutter. The D40 is a gem though.

I got mine yesterday with two A heads and first impression was positive. Very compact and easy to handle.

Fits nicely (Ranger Quadra AS + one head) in the camera bag with other photo equipment (one pro body and few lenses).

Built quality could be better though (especially the umbrella fitting feels weak).

EDIT: here's link to one quick test shot

Do any of you guys who have the Quadra have a 580ex and a light meter? I'd be curious to know the full power readings with the standard refector on the Quadra v's the 580ex at wide and narrow zoom

........i would be interested to see how much stop you gain with the maxi reflector attached to the quadra head.

.......also, are people having a hard time acquiring the speed ring attachment to the quadra? It seems that all the shots I've seen so far are with the kit reflector.

I would like to know about the Quadra's 18cm reflector, but it seems like people are just getting the standard kits for the moment.
