wow, the otter shots are amazing

that close+400mm+50D and whatever else you did really takes you into their world

my otter pics just like an otter way out there in the ocean water and otter all in same focus

you got a nice low down angle too looking right directly into the faces

beautiful sunset along the big sur

EDIT: holy cow! this thread is 80 pages long! i was responding as if it only had two pages the 1st and the 80th hah!

I know its a fairly large thread hehe... But alas, all the old contributors have moved on, but me! Haha! I'll be putting up some Big Island lava explosions next week when I get back. I wish someone had told me there were no birds on this island as far as the otter photographs, that low angle and be had when a kayak is used, which it was. It really brings them to life! Manu thanks for the kind words skibum5!

ARE YOU SERIOUS?!? Why is there LESS noise at 640?!? Haha!!! I've never tried that. I'll see what I can do tomorrow. Thanks man!

wow lots of amazing shots of wildlife, you sure got to work fast
i need about 10 years to catch up (that is how long ago you got the 50D right )

anyway the 50D has the analog amp only doing full stop jumps so inbetween is under or overexposing and then multiplying in software

the 1/3 up stops tends to have less DR than the lower even stop AND the next higher even stop the 2/3 up stops at the very bottom tend to have same DR as the next lowest even stop and more than the next higher even stop although by ISO640 is probably less DR than 400 but still more than at 800 and a lot more than 500 .

anyway im about to make actual measurements and charts but i think that is how it will work out

Lots of excellent shots here. It shows the capability of the 400 5.6L. I've been interested in this lens for a while but, also have the 100-400L. One of these days I'll have to check one out.

Get the 400 f5.6 unless you like airshows and zoo photography. I retract any previous opinions I have had about the 400mm being only good in good light is used on a tripod. I've shot stationary birds in poor light on a tripod with great results! Generaly both the 400mm and 100-400mm are good lenses but for BIF, the AF on the prime can't be beat for the money!

Conrad, those black and white birds are Black Necked Stilts. In the flock flight, one of them (with the buff colored head) is an American Avocet. Well done.

I've got more volcano photos I still have to edit. The 400mm sure came in handy in a pinch!

If you ask me, it's pretty darn good at shooting panoramas. In my case, the 400 DO, at about 2 miles distance, through dense FL air:

The 4th, 5th, and the last two were taken with the 400 DO on a 1Ds3. If you didn't have that FL, you'd have to cope with a single 200mm shot (on FF):
