That is a very colourful and striking image, Conrad. You got those colours perfect.
However, any time major cropping is done followed by a major pp intervention, it shows on the image. Probably nothing anyone can do there.
Perhaps 500 +2xTC might get ya enough FL.
In the interim, why not try 400 + 1.4xTC. It's slow to focus but Bald Eagles should be rather easy for AF to lock on because of the colour contrast.

Now, for that combo to AF you'd need a 1 series camera. Otherwise, gotta MF.

Beautiful - you are setting the standard by which I judge my own efforts at shooting Grackles...

I hate when this happens....trying to shoot a nice floral bokeh and a stupid bird just dances into the frame..

Another curious bird decides to butt in just when I am checking my sensor for cleanliness.

@ Peter: nice shots of the flowers/bird and grackle man!

@ Noelle: sorry I've been preoccupied with a "new" old fishing boat my uncle got for the whole family to use. Gonna see if it helps me get closer to some of the waterfowl around here!

That is a gorgeous shot, Rich! I have yet to catch a good heron in flight, but it's on my to-do list once I get better at using this gear

Question: is there a lot of color/pattern variation in the great blue herons? Some of the ones I've shot don't quite match up to the ones I find looking at images online, but they are clearly a lot more like the blue than any other variety...

Like Brown Pelicans , they must have different colors and or immature vs adults etc. I not sure if males and females , like scrub jays are the same or have a different color pattern. I have noticed this guy has a beeper blue and the salmon color is more vivid now then he/she was before. http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/cc150/blackies_owner/_MG_0502_edited-1copy.jpg

Looks pretty sharp at that setting Rich. Mine needed +7 to be sharp but now I can cut glass! Hehe...

My 300mm f/4L IS was about the same +7 this one is really close. Do you have issues with infinity , or really long shots on your 400 AF?
