Any tips on how to acquire, focus and track birds as they are zooming along? I'm assuming hours and hours of practice will help but I might as well ask you folks!

Hello!!

What body and lenses are you using?

Practice on sea gulls is good!!

I pretty much knew it would take a bunch of practice but I appreciate the tips on starting with gulls etc. I'm using a 40D and the 400 5.6.

I mainly see Red winged black birds and Swallows. So it's mostly bird on cattail or tiny bird streaking across the horizon!

Are you using the * Back focus button and are you shooting AI Servo?

That is what I do and I try to PAN the birds movements

Yup. Both of those settings and the focus limiter is set to the long end. ISO 400+ to keep shutter speeds up past 1/1000.

I'm mainly trying to use the center focus point only and it's just a bugger trying to get them in the crosshairs and keeping them there...

Conrad..... those are great!!

So I went to the park yesterday after having a really bad day and tried to take a picture of me surrounded by the squirrels but it did not work out very well

The time on the 5D is not long enough

What time? The shutter delay? You need a wireless remote shutter release. Cheap!

Oh boy red-wings and swallows are a tall order for a beginner being that they are quite small. Try ducks, then gulls, then pigeons, and when you've got those down, try the smaller ones if thats what you want to mainly shoot. Unless the little ones are standing on a tree stump, they are tough to get!

Here's a couple from today... I got off work way way too late and had to bring a flash. Then I had it at the wrong setting (of course). So these turned out pretty crappy. 1/60th and 1/250th second shots. TERRIBLE!

I'll be going back again when the sun is just a tad bit higher and see what I can get!

Dang, leave this thread for a few minutes and Conrad's wonderful shots of the owls are already buried on the previous page. Gotta give him props! Great set of owls!

Thanks Wing! Hey listen on your way to Alum Rock Park don't forget try to get there when the sun is out. The whole park is in a canyon so it gets really dark quickly. You might want to bring a flash just in case.

I hope they are still there by then. There's also an aviary there with a captive owl I think. Just tell the missus about the creek, the playground, the park, the barbeque grills, and how you can make a day of it! (then sneak off and shoot shoot shoot) Hehe...

On the 40D you should be able to go up to 800 ISO without too much noise and get that shutter speed at 1/2000

DO IT!!

I will take your word for it. If it messes up my camera you will just have to buy me a new one.
