I move to disqualify Noelle due to lack of participation, and crown Conrad the BIF and other nonessential 400 shooting king title! ...maybe that'll put a fire under her eyes!

I support the motion. Conrad should win this epic battle without a doubt !

Oh man you guys are way too kind! Let's give Noelle a chance here haha! She's probably busy with pre-schoolers and her studio and her family and polishing her awards.... Oh and trying to see if there's an antidote to my Noelle voodoo doll.

Pete, that bird deserves a bit more time spent on processing the image (or exposing correctly in the first place):

(Not too much I can do with an already "cooked" small JPEG file - are you still not shooting in RAW Pete?).

I would also repeat an earlier opinion that Conrad needs to spend more time on exposure taking the shot and on post-processing.

Colin

Colin thank you for giving me a pp alternative.
Now, the main difference between the two grackle images I posted above is the incidence angle of light upon its head irredescent feathers. I have refraned from lifting the second image exposure because I felt I would have fallen into the PP trap of showing colours which were simply not there to start with. At the same time, by doing that to the head, I'd be altering the balance colouring of the bird. All around, in my view of photography, that would take me away from veracity of colours as seen by my eye.
So, yeah, the first instinct was to lift the levels, but then when I saw the result I decided against it.

JPGs all the way here, Colin.

thanks Todd!

You see Conrad.... you will never really win when you are competing against a girl.

If your images keep getting better I may have to break out the tears for the sympathy vote

Well done, little Noelle.
No.1 is photographically the strongest one.
The last one ranks extremely high on the cute scale.
You've got that exposure and focus right where it belongs.

Set up a bird feeder in the backyard last week, and am finally starting to get some visitors. Here are some shots with 400/5.6 shot through a double pane window:

@Harry, you've got a beautiful visitor! Looks great, maybe leave a little more room around the crop. Is there any branch perches around the feeder? So far, I've gotten only towhees and juncos on mine but I've seen a flock of waxwings on a nearby pine tree so hopefully they'll pay my feeder perch a visit someday.

Thank you!

I was pleased with #1 the most myself because all the ducks and the momma were in focus. I was focusing on the little ducks and not the mom.

How would you approach an image like this? Where would you put your focus point

I ask because I sometimes struggle with images like this

The last image just melted my heart because you can see them doing everything mom does. This little guy decided he was going to dry off his little wings and when he popped up and I saw how tiny his wings were it was too cute!
