Damn you guys and your 1D's hehe....
The 1D3n or 1D4 is on my shortlist but until it comes out, I am busy visualizing different scenarios that would make the addition transparent to the wife.

That's the tough part... getting one over the significant other! Hehe... Good thing I'm single! I wonder if its worth waiting for the next model to come out (driving the current prices down some more) or just picking up the 1D IIN now?

Carry both bodies, 400 on your 50d and 24-105 on your 5d2 and you can shoot landscape while you wait for your birds. I carry the 400 on my 40d and a tamron 17-50 on a (lowly) 350d (but nice and compact especially paired with the tamron and especially when carrying 2 bodies). I have the added obligation of taking pics of wife and kid so the 2 bodies make it alot easier, ever try shooting people with just a 400mm!?
@conrad: So I was doing some online research on other birding areas closer to my home (El Cerrito) and was focused in on the Hayward Regional Shoreline (HRS) and found it to have a good abundance of birds and is about half the distance to that Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge from my home, would be only 25 minutes drive or so to this HRS place. As I was searching around I came across this sight:
It showed a pretty good list of sightings of each type of bird and/or location but may be more focused on the Eastbay near my home versus the South bay near yours (Conrad) but you may find similar listings for your area.
Then to my surprise, THERE IS AN EAGLE NEST in the Berkeley/Oakland hills about 15 minutes drive from my home. It is hidden and folks are not so open about disclosing its location. Finding the nest would be nice but just being in the vacinity will give me a chance of shooting them in the skies or trees.
Here is one birder's sighting log:
"Yesterday morning in Sibley Volcanic Regional Park:
Rufous-crowned Sparrow - 2 along main ridge above Quarry Trail
Lark Sparrow - 3 ditto
Hairy Woodpecker - 2 copulating Loop Trail Golden Eagle - 2 flying around, crashing through vegetation, and
perching close to the ground in the dense eucalyptus on the Loop Trail,
acting like jumbo-sized accipiters. They were screened when perched and
I couldn't tell what they doing. I've never seen Golden Eagles below
the forest canopy before."
So now the question for this weekend is, do I still go out to the sure-money Hayward Regional Shorelines or take a chance at the eagles and potentially get skunked?
@ Wing: Dude... Are you kidding? I'm assuming all these raptors are nesting right NOW. So we should try to get them now. I cannot get off work early this week but I'll try this weekend to get that osprey. PM me your cell phone and I'll try to join you this weekend for that Golden Eagle hunt! Sounds cool! I'll sign up for that site and keep tabs on the South Bay scene for you!
Sell me cheap....I want the 16-35. If you enjoy birding maybe you want to sell your 5D II and get Mark III.

Hehe... you're funny! I'm not selling my stuff. I was merely stating how sad it was that they are all just kinda sitting around. Thanks for asking though!
Your unused lenses have been crying to be used by their owner....so I'm trying to relieve their pains....
