That's a great read. I've bookmarked it.

Glad to help.

I studied media law last year so if I can help/advise, just ask.

The nature of privacy, public exposure and photographers' rights has changed now that EVERYONE has a camera...just as has the definition of journalist...with everyones' camera-phone at the ready there really is no privacy anymore once you leave your house (not to mention IR photography that can "see" through your house walls)...
When everyone has a camera and everyone is taking photos of everyone these restrictions will be impossible to enforce...and we're almost there already, right?

Thanks I'll keep it in mind since I'm expanding my stuff into photojournalism.

Probably jay, but I don't see that as an argument which would help us much, except that it's unenforceable for the reasons you describe. Not meaning to discount what you're saying though. With the number of CCTV cameras on every street corner, it's impossible to go about your daily life without being photographed.

It's more a case of who's being targeted. The bad guys are using small P&S cameras or mobile phones. They are then sending multimedia messages to Osama Bin Liner before anyone can do anything about it. The law and those who uphold it attacks the visible photographer: the ones like us.

I've said it from day 1: this is not about terrorism, it's about control.

This thread makes me want to cry, from the worst reasons and from the best of them. I'll try to keep quite from now on (not sure I'll manage though) but all I can say to you is this: You try to live under constant fear for decades (think of 9/11 on a smaller scale but on a constant frequency) and then - only then - judge us.

Do you know how many songs we have about a better tomorrow, the one which never seem to come? About tranquility? About the desire for peace? Do you know how it is to live without hope? To bear and raise children which you know that will have to fight for their lives, just like you did and just like your parents have done? You probably don't. I envy you to no end but at least have the decency to try to understand, and not necessarily to accept, under which hard conditions we live in and why we do what we do.

No, I am not proud of some things the Israeli army or the Israeli government have done but I do understand them from the simple reason that I live here.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

I know the following post is off-topic and involves politics once more, but I would like to add this as I consider it important, as there is a lesson to be learned here.

We have a saying in Portugal that, given the rough translation, goes something like this:
"He who has a ceiling made of glass (in his house) should not cast stones to his neighbour."

Here's why:

So please do not bring the UN as a role-model example of Justice Keeper in the world.

I would have to say that I do wholeheartedly agree with this.
Where were the UN when the Tutsi genocide happened?
Where was America?
Where was Europe?

Nearly 1 million people were killed in just a few days. Nearly all of them were killed by knifes, hammers and swords as they were not deemed "worthy" of a bullet.
Nearly all of the women who survived the genocide were raped. Around 5 thousand babies were born from these rapes, and they were murdered.
The west did nothing to stop this.
Why?
Because Rwanda is one of the poorest countries in the word.

I believe it was Condoleezza Rice who called the Rwanda President during the massacre, and threatened him.
You know what he said?
He laughed and asked why would the Americans go to Rwanda? Rwanda has no riches, Rwanda no oil...

Ten years later the genocide was remembered by the survivors in a ceremony.
One of the worst crimes of the 20th century against man-kind was remembered by the victims alone. No one from the international community gave a damn...

We like to considered ourselves as the good guys, but we, we my fellow westerners, we are quite some hypocrites...

P.S.
To the ones who are not familiar with the Tutsi massacre, please watch the 2004 movie "Hotel Rwanda" by Terry George. It was nominated for 3 Oscars and 29 other nominations, being awarded 12 wins, and features Don Cheadle, a very good actor.
It's a real eye opener.
I cried when I watched this movie, and I was ashamed of my country, I was ashamed of Europe, of the UN and of mankind in general for not doing anything.

I would be very curious to know how much training the Police have had in dealing with this new law, on the streets, as it were. Probably little or none I would imagine.

I'm less worried about how much training the police have had, as how much training the wannabe do-gooder pseudo police (PCSO's and super traffic wardens) have. If you think the police have a surfeit of power over responsibility consider the idea of an officious busybody with 2 weeks training and 80% of the powers of a policeman.
