After another day of testing and normal real-world shots, I'm going to say this lens is just phenomenal. I will be selling not just the 70-200 2.8 version I, but the venerable 135 L. The only thing I'll loose is the bokeh of the 2.0
The new lens is just exciting to work with. Really brilliant CR. Fun. Thank you Canon engineers.
I've found one (minor) thing to complain about the MkII. It's supposed to detect when it is on a tripod and turn IS off. It does not. Instead if you look at live view at 10x magnification you can see the frame slowly floating around. When doing long exposures it results in somewhat blurry shots. Turn the IS off and you get perfectly sharp pictures, Mode I/II makes no difference.
Obviously it isn't a big deal, but you need to be aware of it. I had hoped that the IS would be useful even on a tripod - to counteract minute movements that may come from say a gust of wind. This is not the case and the IS does more harm than good.
Update: My mistake, it does turn it off on a tripod, but only after you press the shutter. Read more below.
I tried asking it but it would not say.
Come on, how on earth would I know if I have a defective one or not?
Edit: Actually it works. I did some more controlled tests and while the IS is still enabled when you half-press the cable shutter release (and the image floats around in live view) it seems to turn it off at the moment I actually press the shutter. I'm guessing they have left it enabled to facilitate manual focusing while the camera is on the tripod.
The blur I got previously must have had an unrelated cause. I've done repeated tests with long exposure now and there is no blur.

Then we come to AF. One word......SNAPPY! This thing snaps into focus so fast and accurate that one feels like they just got whiplash. I tried it in low light on my 5D2 and absolutely no hunting. Incredibly confident and competant AF!
Oh yeah ? Can it do this kinda superfast stacked BIF action which my Magic Drainpipe does with ease ?

The lenses you have are all about low weight, small size and low profile. Any 70-200/2.8 lens is the complete opposite. In fact, I sold my 70-200/2.8 IS only because of these reasons. You may want to consider these factors. Happy shooting, Yakim.
Quite agree with Yakim, I would buy the 70-200mm 2.8 IS II ONLY if the weight is the same with f/4 IS version - and as sharp as my 70-200/f4 IS copy.

I just got mine today. It's late so I haven't been able to do many test shots, but I was wondering: does the IS make intermittent whirring noises? I was expecting a constant low level adjustment sound (which I can hear) but sometimes there is a brief "seek-whirr" kind of noise about as loud as the autofocus mechanism. This "seek-whirr" lasts only a fraction of a second before it goes back to a pretty quiet operation. Just checking if that's normal.
edit: BTW this is my first Canon lens with IS so I'm not sure what to expect exactly. The only other IS lens I have used recently is a 17-55mm EF-S at a store and it was only for a short time and the store was noisy....Show more →
Well thanks for all the replies people :P
After taking it out for a shoot it looks like the "seek-whirr" noise is nothing to worry about. It happens when the IS starts after a shutter half-press and when IS stops 2 seconds after the shutter half-press is released.

Not really sure why I just watched that video... but I really felt your excitement and it made me smile remembering the "new lens is here!!!" days that I've had. ALWAYS a big day. Congrats - and enjoy your new lens!
