I don't get it. I bought a new 1D Mark III last week. Serial number 573xxx.
I called Canon to see if the camera was a affected by the service notice. They replied "no, your camera was manufactured with the correct focus points. "
When I shoot using the center focus point, it is tack sharp.
However, when I use an outer focus point, all images are very soft.

This is unacceptable!
I might return it and buy a 1ds2, or get a d3!
This stinks!
Did you tell them it had problems with the outer focus points? I find it hard to believe they wouldn't send you a shipping label. If their main site doesn't mention any specific serial numbers, I would have them check it out.

What kind of rationale is that? Send it in to Canon for the AF adjustment and then test it afterwords, if it doesn't perform well then make your decision. My serial number is a rock throw away from yours and it had the same issue...I sent it in to Canon for the fix and now all is well.
It's a perfectly fine rationale b/c the person can still return it and get full value for it.
Once the person sends it in to Canon and decides he/she doesn't like it, that person would be taking a pretty deep depreciation hit. Kinda like driving the new car off the lot...
$4000 is enough to warrant serious consideration of all factors I think...
That said, the latest recall fix is looking very promising. I will be sending mine in on Monday as well.
If they did in fact finally iron out the kinks, then it's definitely a worthy camera...

I guess I am just a wee bit angry to spend 4 grand on a camera that has to be fixed out of the box.
Maybe I will send it in.
Return it, and buy an used one with the latest fix to save $1000 in your pocket.
I am not sure what's the date code of the serial # 573xxx Mark III, but my guess is that it should be manufactured between July to Sept. 2008, so likely it still needs the latest fix. One of my Mark IIIs with 571xxx serial # needs the latest fix..
Spending $4k for a new camera, and have to send it in for fix is just not acceptable for me...

It is unreasonable to expect newer 1D3 models don't need the fix at some point?
I suspect that newer models are pretty OK. Before this second recall, new owners were praising the camera to bits ... it really was like they had a different machine. Seemingly, if the returns prognosis's are correct, they actually did have a different machine.
Well I just called CPS and asked them about my camera. Serial number 572*** and it was not affected for the latest issue and I do not need to send it in.
I never have had issues which just doubly assures me

I would call them again, the first time I called the guy said I was not affected 564xxx, the second time I called another guy sad I was affected and he did not know why the first guy told me I was not.
Mine is at Canon right now, was told last week it was a 3-5 day turn around, they received it last week (Thur) and got the notification today that it will be processed in 7 days starting today

Called again and it was not in the serial range.
But he did offer to do it anyways just to make sure for me. This time I accepted as I have a 2nd body to shoot with this time around.
Better to make sure I suppose, plus any fine tune will make my camera extra better as it was perfectly fine right now lol
I am really not sure whether they do in fact have any kind of definitive system to all this.
I have a pre-dot 1DMKIII from 2007. Sub-mirror fix done. Mirror box also replaced. You would figure it would be an affected one, but I was told no. I told the person I was having AF issues and he agreed to have it sent in. I don't have glaring AF issues like some of you, but I am not entirely impressed by Servo performance either. Not nearly enough to leave it in that mode unless necessary.
So I am sending it in. I hope they don't disregard mine just because it's not an affected serial, and make sure they do what they do to affected ones.
I just emailed canon and they responded within 10 minutes about the AF- Fix. Apparently the Irvine center is not equipped to do the AF-adjustments so I can't just drop it off. They need me to ship it to VA..

Could be, based on what you said you had done prior in your note above, that you have the hard part fixed. However, there is an AF adjustment that I think any body is eligible for. Also sounds like, from what others are reporting their notes from Canon say when they get their cam back, Canon may be checking the hardware and making some fixes ... replacing some washers seem to be a common one.
The only thing I could do was fill out that form and mention that I had some AF issues in Servo and that I read some owners having washers replaced as part of the fix.
Well, time to wait!
