p.23 #1 · Mark III-Recall again ?

Got mine back today. I sent it last Monday to Newport News, but it came back today (Monday) via FedEx from Jamesburg. What? They couldn't fix it in NN?
Here's what the report says
"We have examined the product according to your request, and it was found
that the adjustment of the AF assembly was incorrect causing inaccurate auto
focus. The AF assembly was reworked, Replaced MIRROR BOX ASS'Y, LEVER ASS'Y,
SH CHARGE & MIRROR CHARGE, PCB ASS'Y, C, WASHER (SUS) Updated firmware."
Also, it now has 2 white dots inside the battery compartment.
Mine has already been in for fixes twice. This is the second Mirror Box. Serial #513XXX. I have always had trouble with the A1 Servo and AF and thought it was me. BIF were nearly impossible, especially since I got a 500mm lens. If it wasn't raining, I would be out there trying it out. I have a good feeling about it after reading other people's posts about how much improvement they have had. Can't wait to try it out.

Wow, lot's of work done there!

I hope they do the same to mine to be honest with you!
I sent mine in back in Feb 04, 09 and they did replace the mirror box assembly, but they didn't do all the other work that you described.

I guess it's a case-by-case thing...or maybe up to the individual doing the fix? Maybe some techs document more than others?

Who knows...

Let us know how things turn out for you. I agree. All indications are this might be the fix we were waiting for a long time!

When I emailed Canon, they sent me a shipping slip to Irvine, CA.

This is the email they sent:

Thank you for your inquiry about having the autofocus accuracy in your
EOS-1D Mark III adjusted by our Factory Service Center. We value you as
a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

Canon has discovered that some EOS-1D Mark III digital SLR cameras have
a problem with AF (auto-focusing) accuracy. If an AF point other than
the center AF point is used, focus may be soft.

If you are experiencing this issue, please be advised that, starting
March 3, 2009 Canon will offer repairs to affected cameras free of
charge. Canon will also cover the cost of shipping and handling in
connection with this repair. If you are satisfied with the AF
performance of your EOS-1D Mark III camera now, it will not be necessary
to have it repaired for this issue.

We would like to send you a pre-paid shipping label so that you may send
your camera to our Factory Service Center for repair. Please reply to
this message with the following information so we may send the label:

1. Full mailing address including Street, City, State and Zip code (no
P.O. Boxes, APO or FPO):

2. Date of purchase:

NOTE: We are unable to ship to a PO Box, FPO or APO addresses.

Please note that our U.S. Factory Service Centers are unable to accept
packages from or return equipment to addresses outside the United
States.

Once again, your satisfaction with our products is extremely important

We look forward to your reply with the information we have requested
regarding your EOS-1D Mark III.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

It does seem strange that no standard statement for the repair work.

They even reseted my shutter click counts to "0" while all the C.Fn no change, interesting.....

FYI, I called Canon also, and asked just what they did...... Jamesburg, NJ did my work. They replaced the shutter, mirror box, and some washers.. They faxed me the paperwork showing the parts replaced with part #'s. My other paperwork was very generic. see below...

"We have examined the product according to your request. and, it was found
that the adjustments of the AE assembly was incorrect causing inaccurate auto
focus from time to time. All repaired and corresponding testing have been completed to Canon Factory standards. Firmware was updated to the latest version. Adjusted exposure & focus, cleaned C-mos and checked all factory specs."

HI, Chad,

My Yellow_Dot one was fixed in Jamesburg, NJ as well, but only:
---------------------------------------------
Adjusted exposure & focus, cleaned C-mos and checked all factory specs. Firmware was updated to the latest version.
----------------------------------------------
.
.
No other work done, so the newer body does look like having less problem etc..

I called today and was told my body was affected, although I haven't had any issues that I know of, and they are sending me a shipping label and some paperwork to fill out. They said 7-12 days to get it back and no CPS service offered.

So I sent my Mark III in that I bought refurbished from Adorama back in September 08 timeframe. It is a 52XXXX serial body. I didn't have too many problems with it, an occasional unexplained OOF image was the thing that really bothered me.

This is what my Service detail area contained.
"We have examined the product according to your request, and, it was found that the adjustment of the part was incorrect causing inaccurate auto focus from time to time. Replaced Mirror box ass'y, D PCB ass'y & other. Adjusted exposure & focus, cleaned C-mos. Update firmware. Checked all to factory specs.

There are also two white paint dots inside the back of the battery compartment. I never noticed them before. They also fixed the rubber grip below the delete/function buttons. It was kind of coming loose.

I took my 1DsMKIII in for service to Irvine a coupe days after the recall. They checked the AF on the body with a lens. I'm assuming I don't need to call in for this as they would have checked at the same time right?

yea Ok. The courier just picked them up from my studio..... & Canon tell me I will have them back before the end of the week. Pretty good when you consider it is Tuesday afternoon, they are in Sydney & I am way down in Tasmania.
Yea you are right about the focus.... it has sucked but I have tried to remain philosophical about it.
It is going to be like getting a new model camera, I can't wait.
I am still prepared btw to cut Canon some slack on this. This is pretty advanced technology here & these guys are pushing hard to keep it coming. It is a pity they did not get it right no question but I am relieved that there now appears to be a solution.

Hope it finally works as you hoped it always would. It's like robocamera, built from the ground up with only a small part of the original left.

Matt they told me 24-48 hours to get the e-mail with labels and paperwork. I assume they are trying their best to space them out a bit to keep the turn around time down, if possible.

Canon CS send the request to UPS, and UPS emails you the shipping lable, so it's the delay... you should get it less than 24 hours during the weekdays...

if it's weekends, you have to wait until Monday for the process really begins..so that why you need 24-48 hours to get the lable.

I just got off the phone with Canon. According to them, all service centers can perform the AF check and repair but Virginia was staffed up to most efficiently handle the load. So they tried to funnel all the III's to them.

Only Virginia can do the Err-99.

Unfortunately, mine went to Irvine. I guess we'll see what happens.

I shipped my 1Ds III to Canon last Friday and received it back today. The report said only that they updated the firmware and adjusted the auto-focus. I was pretty unhappy with the AF. It was certainly not as good as my Mk II, which made me pretty grumpy. I've take a few shots and it does seem better. While it would have been nice not to have had the problem, I do appreciate Canon's executing a large-scale recall to fix it.
