Talk about reaching I will probably soon start reasoning along those lines myself.

Hmm, at 2300 euro I think my old 24 ts may hold its value a little more than I thought.

Realistically what would be possibly uses?

- Architecture, indoors and outdoors (shift)
- Product photography, studio (tilt)
- Landscape, when you don't have a ladder (tilt)

What else am I missing?

I am trying to reason why I don't need these

How about using the shift to get perfect and easy to stitch panos. They'd be in the 30 megapixel range if done on a 5D2.

The 17 is definately on my shopping list.

Was there some huge demand for TS-E lenses that I'm not aware of??

I don't agree, it pushes them to have a more complete line of lenses than anyone else, period. Canon likes that... so do most people.

>>I agree, if this is all Canon has to offer in terms of lenses, that's a poor showing.

Well, this way no one can complain about their Canon autofocus problems...

I would not mind having the 17, I love my TS-E 45. Hopefully the price will be close to the other TS-E at around $1100. I assume they will still be manual focus.

Regardless of having a more complete line of lenses, in this economy releasing two niche lenses at those projected prices doesn't seem very logical from a sales standpoint IMO...unless of course there are more architecture/interior photogs that I know of.

The massively superior performance of the Nikkor 24/3.5 PC-E over the current 24TS-E might just have something to do about this. Canon's long been the leader with Tilt/shift lenses(in fact they've been one of the major halo products for Canon with Pro shooters given Nikon's much less flexible offerings prior to the 85 Micro PC) and Nikon put a major shot across their bow with the PC-E's.

i use my 45 tse as a walk-around as well as the usual apps, so i don't see these lens as niche equipment

but those prices, whew. i'd love a 24 tse II for < $1K (dreaming)

17mm = 22mm on the 1D Mark III, or 27mm on the 40D/50D... both fairly useful focal lengths.

Prices are absurd. I expected them to be around $2KUS street initially, but this is ridiculous. Hopefully the Euro prices aren't close to US prices and I think that was with VAT?

You know these are going to come in at some high dollar figure. Look at all the past MK II offerings.

I think Canon is trying to create one. The ability to easily do multi-frame composites puts them in a resolution league all to their own. Combine 9 frames from a 1DsMkIII and suddenly the new Leica S is looking preeeety pitiful by comparison.

Very smart move to hold the high end market.

And you are in the minority of those who do. Just because you can use the lens as a walk around doesn't mean its not a niche product. TS-E's, specifically at those price points, are niche lenses--there are no hairs to be split...it is what it is. The majority of those who buy TS-E lenses are buying them for a specific application and not as a general purpose lens.

That's the idea release two niche lens that will be at high prices because in this economy we keep being told the sky is falling so no one will be able to buy anything no matter what you offer. So offer something you won't build many of so you aren't stuck with a warehouse of inventory that didn't sell because no one had any income due to ther job losses. So release something that only a handful will buy so you don't need a ton of inventory. Let the other camera manufacturers go broke by having to store warehouses full of inventory of great offerings they couldn't sell because we all lost our shirts due to cutbacks, layoffs, market crashes, oh reality it is so much fun, to make fun of it.

seriously though you are right they should also release a big seller(demand item) to go with these. But count me in for one of those 17 T+S to use outdoors

My guess is the 24 TSE II will be $1899 or so . . . 17 closer to $2100 . . . 2500 euros is outrageous IMO.

If either of these is properly sharp across the frame, count me in for getting one.

As for pricing, well, it takes money to make money.
