I don't know about you, but for me, the 17 TS-E is a lens I have been waiting for for a LONG time. I absolutely love architectural photography, and having a tilt-shift ultra wide (this is a photography first, BTW...widest tilt/shift ever, I do believe) would be absolutely amazing. I thought I was done, but I'll have to start saving for the 17 TS-E. It should only take me about 4 years to get it.

That's the idea release two niche lens that will be at high prices because in this economy we keep being told the sky is falling so no one will be able to buy anything no matter what you offer. So offer something you won't build many of so you aren't stuck with a warehouse of inventory that didn't sell because no one had any income due to ther job losses. So release something that only a handful will buy so you don't need a ton of inventory. Let the other camera manufacturers go broke by having to store warehouses full of inventory of great offerings they couldn't sell because we all lost our shirts due to cutbacks, layoffs, market crashes, oh reality it is so much fun, to make fun of it.
seriously though you are right they should also release a big seller(demand item) to go with these. But count me in for one of those 17 T+S to use outdoors ...Show more →
I see what you're saying but even if they are producing less product the TS-E design is far more complicated than standard straight fixed barrel design, therefor production time increases as sales numbers diminish. If they had gone ahead and introduced a lens at a moderate price that would have higher interest all the while being easily produced they would turn a much larger profit. At least that is how I see things, though TBH I was never very good at corporate economics so I could be way off base.

I agree, if this is all Canon has to offer in terms of lenses, that's a poor showing. I don't believe that TS-E lenses are big sellers in comparison to the four lenses listed above. Clearly, and this comes from various sites, people want the 400mm to be updated. I mean, come on.......if Canon can introduce excellent IS into their other telephotos down to the 300 f/4 while maintaining sharpness, then clearly the time has easily come for the 400. It's one thing to leave IS off of.....say, the 135L and the little 200L. They're so small, light and compact as well as their focal lengths being low that it's not a big deal. But the 400 The 24-70 seems to get a mixed bag: some want IS, others not. I would mind IS, it would add to an already great walkaround lens. ...Show more →
I also agree, I was surreptiously suggesting more needy upgrades for Canon

Robert, Robert......by the time that lens percolates thru Canon Canada to our retailers, and then the sales taxes are levied, you'll be looking at a $4,000 lens.
(BTW, you might be pleased to learn that I am done with buying any new Canon stuff. I am just about to order a used 28-70L mostly curiosity driven, and that's where it ends, by and large. )

Was there some huge demand for TS-E lenses that I'm not aware of??
They are very useful lenses, and Canon's were dated. I almost switched to Nikon because of their new lenses. Hopefully the canons will be good. That 17mm in particular looks sweet! If the optics are good, I see no reason to keep my 16-35mm. It's great to shoot a landscape at about f/11 and get everything sharp.

Perhaps, but at least in Canada if one is a CPS member one gets pro items at dealer net (assuming that little perk isn't lost in the coming CDN CPS revamp). And since one is a pro to get CPS pricing, chances are good that one is PST exempt and is able to claim the GST for an input tax credit... effectively negating the sales taxes. It should keep the price pretty much in line with the US.
Thank you canon!! I will purchase your 24mm as soon as it's available! Thats my most used commercial lens, and I considered switching to nikon for its 24 t/s alone. Now I don't have to.
I must say, 17 tse is a huge surprise, and an amazing focal length for its image circle.
Why does Canon announce new products in places like Amstelveen, the Netherlands, when the PMA show is in Las Vegas? I've seen this kind of thing on several announcements over the last few years.
