Anyone know a shoot-off between this, the adaptall 17 and the tokina 17 3.5?

I've been planing one, but I won't test the Tokina, it's garbage from what I saw on the copy I Tested. You should for sure get the Tokina as it is all that will fit on your Nikon.

The original Tamron "adaptall" mounts for Nikon are still cheaply available. The Tokina can be very good (better than the Tamron) depending on the copy.

Hmm... well, the alternatives are nikon 18 3.5, 20 f/4, tamron adaptall 17 3.5 or tokina 17 3.5..... OR fare more expensive, but also a bit better I guess:

The 19/2.8 version 1 which is all that works on the Nikon is not very good. Really the 18/2.8D is the sharpest wide I've ever seen having used the 18/3.5 OM and Nikkor, 17/3.5 Tokina and Tamron, 18/4 Ai, and 20/4 AI. I wouldn't even consider the Leica.

I have lens tests from MP on the Nikon 18/4, OM 18/3.5, Contax zeiss 18/4, Tokina 17/3.5 SL, and Tamron 17/3.5 www.edsawyer.com/lenstests/

The Tokina is a good lens for the $, and really not that bad overall. Tamron may be better, a lot depends on copy variation. OM 18 trumps both IMNSHO. I haven't tried the Contax but it puts up good numbers in tests, though in real life is softer in the corners than the OM, from what I have seen.

Vivitar 17/3.5 is an option too... Maybe a step below the others, but at $150ish it's very nice IMO.

Got lucky with a good guess, I set it a little past 6' on the distance scale and hoped for the best - thanks TWoK!

Can't let the thread fall too far, here's a shot I took while taking a walk with my son the in the middle of the day the other day. It is the yard of a junk artist, he calls his yard "Junkyart." Not sure about the processing, but it wasn't the best time of day. I just wanted to contribute to this wonderful thread devoted to a wonderful lens.

A couple more of an interesting house in the neighborhood, from my walk, both wide open, I believe. I apologize ahead of time for brightness (or darkness issues). I find that my computer at home has a very powerful backlight, and my pictures all look dark whenever I look at them from work. Sometimes, I blindly compensate by cranking up the brightness without knowing how it will look on other people computers.

Nice strong colours ewadler. I also have the same issue with my monitor - I actually had to re-process 600 wedding images TWICE due to this - and my monitor is profiled daily and all. I ended up having to set the gamma to 2.40 instead of the industry standar 2.20 to get a semi-realistic display of the tones that will end up in prints.
Looks like its time to bite the bullet on a better monitor

Yes on digital, that is what you often see. It depends on the situation though. My copy is up for sale in the B&S because I need to fund my new found RF addiction.

Well, I can't use such gear, as I'm on nikon :P So my only alternatives are my 20 1.8 sigma, a smaller, but not so sharp nikon 20 f/4, a 18 3.5 from nikon or tamron daptall 18 3.5.. something in those lines anyway!

Seriously the Nikkor 18/2.8D is amazing.
