Great comparisons and IQ. Did you have to make any lens adjustments on the 50D? My 100-400 was recently rebuilt by Canon and even with -9 is still soft, and am not completely happy with my 600 on this camera either. Results on hairy beasts are OK but I am not happy with the lack of feather detail on little "burdies".

My only fear is that it is me, a dyslectic, half senile old fart that failed to read properly.

Thanks Wes for the look and sorry for a late response. Neither 50D nor MK3 needed any MA done to it. I do have 100-400 and it is sharp wide open. Initially I was not getting sharp captures from my 600 but after over 2500 shots I got much better, it was me not the camera or the lens. The strange thing is I also have 500 and even with 1.4 TC I was getting sharp captures but not with 600 without the TC. It sure was the technic these 2 lense needed to be dealth differently. Let me know if you need more info.

They both did a excellent job. I have to believe the photographer is a really big part of these results.

I am totally impressed by the 50D shots. Well, by the other, too, but the 50D looks like a real winner. Stunning detail - great shooting.

Thanks for the look David, I agree the 50D is indeed impressive, I don't believe there is a camera out there for under 1100 dollars can best the 50D.

Very nice series Garen and great work.
I have a question. Having been through this test and if you were only able to take one camera and one lens with you for say small birdies which are usually taken perched and often require a lot of copping, and alternatively for BIF which are usually large relatively large birds, which combo would you elect to take with you for each.

Thanks Martin for the look and your kind comments, and sorry for a late response I totally forgot about my own thread . If I have to take only one camera body and lens for birding purposes it will be MK3 and 500 IS lens with the 1.4 TC. The reason being I get the best BIF's hand holding the combination, I can't hand hold 600 for too long.

Great shots and obviously the photographer has a lot to do with the quality. Very impressive. Have you had an opportunity to use the 50D at higher ISOs? Just wondering since so many reviews of the 50D are negative in that regard.

Greetings and thanks for looking and your kind words, and sorry for late response. I have very few high ISO shots and they are all in door under good normal in door lighting situations. I was very impressed with her 6400 ISO capture with correct exposure. The key word here is to "expose" correctly. By no means it is not a D3 in any respect and I do have a D3, but for under 1100 dollars I really don't think there is a camera out in the market that can best it.

Garen,

The pictures themselves were all great.

But if your purpose is to compare the quality of the cameras, you need to use the same lens with both cameras. I have tried the 400DO, and DO optics do not have the same brilliance as the L-lenses. So you are putting the 1D III at a disadvantage by combining it with a DO lens, but I know the 50D to be a nice camera nevertheless.

Still, any comparison between cameras has to be done with the same lens if a picture quality comparison between two bodies is the point.

Thanks for the look Bogatyr, you are 100% correct and for the record no camera in the market is better, sharper than 1DMK3 as far as IQ is concern and I own or have owned most of them. The day started slow and there was no plan or intention to have any meaningful in depth tests done, to just experiment and make the best out of a slow day. The test just proves that 1100 50D is not bad at all despite of all negative comments spread in all internet forums and boards.

Very nice pictures in your 1D3 vs 50D shootout. I think 50D is an excellent camera but 1D3 still wins. How about 50D vs 1D2? I am now considering buying one of these two since used ones are both around 1k. I am shooting birds and BIF.

I'd appreciate your insights.

Thanks,
Ray

Thanks for the look Ray. Lets start with ISO approach first, they are very similar at low iso settings, but at higher iso's 50D overall does better. Handling or performance goes to 1DMK2 easily, AF again that goes to 1DMK2, however the 50D's AF system is excellent but not as good as 1D series, IQ that goes to 50D due to newer technology and it has almost twice as many pixels more room for cropping. Another factor you need to consider is what lenses will be used with 50D you can micro adjust the lenses but you can't do it with 1DMK2, on the other hand you can go all the way to F8 and still maintain AF with center point (400 5.6L plus 1.4 TC = F8) with MK2 but not with 50D. What lenses will be used on the intended body and for what purpose?

Thanks Garen. I am new to wildlife photography but like it very much after I tried. I shoot birds and often BIF. I have a 5D2, 100-400L, 1.4x and some other short lenses. 5D2 Al servo AF works very nicely (much better than 5D) but it has only 3.9fps. I am now saving to buy a 500 f/4L. That's why I can't spend too much on 2nd camera.

It seems ISO, IQ, microadjustment and reach go to 50D. AF, build and being able to AF at f8 go to 1D2. How much AF advantage 1D2 has over 50D? Is it a lot or a little? What are your keeper rates with these two cameras? Scratch that. I mean keeper rates for one with less skills.

Thanks again.

The AF difference is a lot more so with all 45 point auto selection active like BIF with clear skies, this is where 50D can't touch 1DMK2 AF system.
