Travelling North from Glasgow to Wester Ross in the Highlands of scotland, the main A87 road passes, and is dominated by, the famous castle Eilean Donan, that guards the Loch and the way to Skye and the Northern Highlands. Barry, Carlo and I arrived near sunset, on a cold and grey afternoon. After photographing for a while, we noticed the colours and mood of the great castle changing, subtly at first and then more dramatically. Finally we drove up the old road above the castle for the view of the Loch, guarded by its castle - by now it was fully night.

Wonderful sequence, my trusty tour guide
This was truly a dream site to see for me. Thank you!
Your shots here are all really fine, and true to the mood of the evening! Terrific depth and sense of place in the these.
Well done.
The second one with the varying shads of red and detail in the old castle is very nice Martin. I'm headed for the highlands in 2010 for a couple of weeks. So many great places to visit and not enough time.
Just super my friend, these are all fantastic. the beautiful comp and warm glistening light of the first is just to die for. the details of the 2nd are sublime. and the last, well the last is just wonderful with it's dark color contrasts, lovely comp and spot on exposure. Great work Martin.
They make me wonder how people knew, or learned to build structures like that (I know it is way evolved), or the Anasazi over here. Was it just hard wired genetically in the beginning?

Thanks Barry.
Glad you liked my take on the scene. It's the first time I've ever stopped at the castle - i season it's packed! It was a wonderful moment when the castle started to glow just after sunset, as the floods were turned on - quite a moment, as I wondered what was happening.

Those are fascinating images. What a place! Great work, Martin.
Hi Jeffrey.
Scotland is full of such historic places and many of them are very inviting to the photog.

Lovely shots Martin. They show this icon off beautifully. Well done.

Hi David.
First time for me. No matter how often you see images of these iconic places, coming across them suddenly, rounding a bend in the road, is very special.

It was a real surprise when that happened, Jim, and the lights took over so slowly that it was almost unoticed. Glad to hear you are contemplating a visit. Send me a PM when you have some plans.

These are sublime, Martin, especially 2 and 3. Definitely a must-see on our list as well.
Ute
Thanks very much, Ute. You and Ian should really spend some time up in the Highlands - of course you can't pick and choose your weather, unfortunately!

Just fantastic images really like #2, #3 very nice work. Are you back home now or still in BC?
Ray Still
Hi Ray.
Glad you enjoyed the castle - it's a wow in reality. Still here in Victoria - going back in 10 day's time.

Thanks Al. I was very pleased with how the third came out as, chimping it, it seemed a real loser! Just goes to show!

You're very kind Hugh. The history in Scotland is at every turn and has the advantage of being set in a wonderful landscape!
